We don't use images of kids on the blog but the reaction on social media is scathing . . .

The cultural insensitivity continues throughout most of local media today. Cheesy Mexican accents and outfits dominate the day.
The reality is, this kind of derogatory characterization wouldn't be tolerated against any other ethnic group (except the Irish leprechauns).
In order to remedy this situation, TKC is totally gonna go to the Library and get some work done tonight . . . Rather than my initial plan of grabbing a burrito spread from Manny's and drinking myself dumb(er).

A small Mexican force held off a larger French force saving a small town. This was not strategically significant, but it was a tremendous morale boost for the Mexicans. It is only celebrated in Mexico, in the town where the battle occurred.
ReplyDeleteIt was first celebrated in this country by migrant farm workers who made of it something more - a general celebration of their heritage.
Everyone knows that Mexico & Mexicans have been treated badly by us since day one. Rather than admit that quilt we dehumanize the victims (ask the Africans how this works.) Our modern 'celebration' of Cinco de Mayo is the result, as is our xenophobic immigration attitudes.
If we were truly as good a people as we pretend to ourselves that we are, we would have an open border with our friends to the south, & we would not treat the Latino's who live here as second class citizens, but as the first peoples who were also their fore-bearers.

Fruity frenchies got walloped in Puebla, city of excellence and culture with affluent residents. KU has study abroad Spanish language and cultural studies here. The international renowned programs had ample funding due to MexTel ten years ago, and savvy students gained FLUENCY --wider prospects, fatter paychecks.

White American bought into the hype, and the Mexican brewers laughed all the way to the bank -- along with every Mexican restaurant in America.

The better answer is that the Americans of Irish heritage get involved and celebrate their ancestry here in America. They teach people about St Pat and driving the snakes out of Ireland and why he is important.
I do not see any Mexican restaurant or organization organizing a parade to celebrate their heritage and teach people.
Instead of getting pissed and being a super PC whiner who is chronically offended, get involved and have some fun.
And next time you go to a mexican restaurant, tell me how the Mariachi band is dressed.
