Celebrate Kansas City Newsie Talk Shows!!!

Saturday morning and time to check the Kansas City mainstream media discourse just to see what propaganda and misunderstanding they're attempting to disseminate.

Take a look:

As always, the GOLD STANDARD of Kansas City chat shows starts off our review . . .

Here's the latest from Ruckus:

Deets:

"Mike Shanin talks to Mike Burke about his involvement in plans for a downtown convention hotel. Then Woody Cozad, Mary O'Halloran, Jim Heeter and Gwen Grant weigh in on the impact a new convention hotel will have for Kansas City, the departure of the Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent and the potential concerns for the district and the hits and misses of the Missouri legislative session."

And then, the newsmaker Week In Review . . .

Topics include: More intern scandal, Gov. Brownback e-mails nobody cares about, never-ending Kansas Legislature session and the money pit we call the Kansas City Zoo.

One more, here's the KCMO week in propaganda in City Hall . . .

Enjoy the conversation, more in a bit . . .

  7. WELCOME TO HYATTUCKUS!!!

That weekly food for thought fight over the news of the day and the trends of the time.

INTERVIEW: Mike Burke, attorney and now convention center hotel development team.

    RUCKUS PANEL:
Jim Heeter--KCMO Chamber of Commerce cheerleader (keep this in mind every time he speaks)
    Gwen Grant--KC Urban League
    Mary O'Halloran--media/political consultant
Woody Cozad--attorney/government relations, former chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, and all-around brilliant suave individual.

    HIGHLIGHTS ONLY

    CONVENTION CENTER HOTEL
Cozad takes the panel to school with--"The convention and meeting business is in decline in the United States. In 2010, 86 million people nationwide attended conventions and meetings, that sounds impressive until you realize that a decade earlier it was 126 million. Austin Texas built an 800-room hotel, projecting 300,000 room rentals/year, but they've never reached 200,000. The projections won't come true. We may get some conventions that we otherwise wouldn't have gotten, but overall you're not going to come close to paying for it."

Gwen says, "It's also important to focus on other areas of the city which haven't received equitable investment, especially when using public dollars. This is going to be superTIF, which diverts taxes from the schools and libraries. The other thing is the catering deal which will hurt local businesses which have been providing that service."

    KCPS DR. GREEN FLEES
Gwen had some good comments on the need to focus much more on the academic achievement of students.
Woody agrees with much of Gwen's comments, but reports that the business community is not concerned with the KCPS based on their history of inaction to take the controversial steps necessary to improve the district.

    MO HOUSE OF SEXT
Woody reports a prescient Democrat Representative Monticello sponsored HB501 which deals with the consequences of inappropriate text messaging!

    ROASTS and TOASTS
Woody ROASTS members of the General Assembly who introduced 2100 bills this year, and a TOAST for the members who only passed 77.
Gwen TOASTS the late Fred A. Curls, founding member of Freedom, Inc.
