TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY WILD TIMES AND ENDORSEMENT SWITCHEROOS @ CITIZENS ASSOCIATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS ENDORSEMENT NIGHT 2015!!!
Last night Kansas City's most respected civic organization hosted a carnival of local politics and their supporters amid upcoming City Council elections in order to decide the fate of this year's contenders.
Here are the highlights . . .
In front of a crowd of nearly 200, the night started with Sherwood Smith bringing a point of order and arguing that endorsements should have already been made according to CA bylaws. He was overruled on the grounds of timeliness but nobody seemed to hold the move against him.
Incumbent Council Dude Dick Davis dodged a bullet and didn't face an expected challenge for his endorsement after all.
Dan Fowler might be the nicest guy in all of the City Council races and he caught a break while graciously accepting his endorsement.
And then things really got exciting . . .
2ND DISTRICT AT-LARGE CANDIDATE TERESA LOAR EARNED CHEERS FROM THE CROWD WHEN SHE TOUTED A "FAIR CAMPAIGN PLEDGE" THAT SHE'S GOING TO ASK HER OPPONENT JAY HODGES TO SIGN!!!
It's basically the same resolution that City Hall passed this week but a bit more to the point in a race that everybody knows will get ugly.
Take a look at it right here . . .
The crowd really loved the idea and it was the only time during the evening that the room exploded in applause.
And then . . .
COUNCILMAN JERMAINE REED OVERTURNED THE CA NOMINATION AND EARNED HIS ENDORSEMENT IN A RUN-OFF VOTE!!!
Remember that Jamekia Kendrix charmed the CA with her Pembroke High education and "valley girl" accent but on this night Councilman John Sharp stood up for his colleague and touted Councilman Reed's many achievements along with a recent victory in bringing the National League of Cities meetup to KCMO.
Councilman Sharp said: "Councilman Reed is a success story. I've seen him come into his own and he's become the best kind of representative. That's what the 3rd District needs. That's what Kansas City needs. He's not afraid to take a stand for what he believe in and he's prepared to do more for his district."
In the end, Councilman Sharp's words turned the tide and the Board of Governors gave the nod to Councilman Reed.
Both 4th District Candidates entered a voter run-off.
Jolie Justus easily defeated a challenge from John Fierro despite an impassioned plea and the realization that Latinos have been excluded from City Council for nearly a generation.
More interestingly . . .
INCUMBENT COUNCIL DUDE JIM GLOVER HELD ON TO HIS CITIZEN ASSOCIATION ENDORSEMENT BY A RAZOR THIN 3 VOTE MARGIN!!!
In a statement, Councilman Glover's peeps had this to say:
"After the screening process, Councilperson Glover received the nomination of the Citizens Association leadership. Former Jackson County Executive Katheryn Shields, and another opponent, challenged the leadership recommendation at tonight’s endorsement meeting, but the association’s voting-membership rejected Ms. Shield’s plea to discard the screening process results.
Coupled with the endorsement of Forward Kansas City, a Northland-centered community group, Councilman Glover now holds the endorsement of his candidacy by the city’s two broad-based good government organizations."
But what does all of this mean?
Once and for all we wanted to hear from Citizens Association leadership about their endorsement process and what it means to the election.
Here's Prez Dan Cofran had to say: "I can't say what the endorsements mean in terms of numbers of votes in different parts of the city . . . It's impossible to quantify as a number or percentage but you can see by all of the interest we generate from the candidates tonight that they think it's important."
Sly James Mayor
Scott Wagner 1st District, At Large
Dick Davis 1st District, In District
Teresa Loar 2nd District, At Large
Dan Fowler 2nd District, In District
Quinton Lucas 3rd District, At Large
Jermaine Reed 3rd District, In District
Jim Glover 4th District, At Large
Jolie Justus 4th District, In District
Lee Barnes, Jr. 5th District, At Large
Ken Bacchus 5th District, In District
Scott Taylor 6th District, At Large
Kevin McManus 6th District, In District
And so, all of the most important Kansas City endorsements have been made and now we start the process of getting less than 10% of the voting public to the polls in order to pick their political poison.
Developing . . .
Katy looks like she could make it close TKC. That's what you need to report.
ReplyDeleteReed is not a stand up guy. He serves only his self interest. I respect Sharp and wonder why he put his good name on the line for someone like Reed? He is another Troy Nash, an empty suit who only shows up for cameras and is a self promoting media whore.
ReplyDeleteThis completely pointless exercise, utterly devoid of any criteria or meaning, is just another example of the tired old "yesterday" politics of KCMO. Many years ago this little group of self-appointed swells might have had some influence in the community, just like Freedom Inc. But over the years demographics, campaigning, and communications change, and the old dinosaurs just keep plodding on oblivious to their own irrelevance.
ReplyDeleteIf there was ANY thought given to the original endorsements, what happened to cause the changes?
It's no wonder election turnouts in the city are so low.
CA, upon looking at that list means to me, Collective Assholes.
ReplyDeleteFair pledge? Only losers sign that thing.
ReplyDeleteJeezuz
ReplyDeleteReally? One old used up trick like John Sharp can sway an endorsement to a do nothing, know nothing, so-called community representative like Reed? Just goes to show they have little to no knowledge of what is happening in our city. Reed is DESPISED in the 3rd district and ultimately, even if only 10% come out to vote, 9 1/2% are voting AGAINST him.
ReplyDeleteJohn Sharp - another White man who thinks he knows what the Third District needs with no qualification whatsoever. Jermaine Reed is a liar. He's no success story. John Sharp LIKES this ass-clown and for good reason - they're cut from the same cloth. Both Sharp and Reed can be easily controlled, manipulated and paid off... just like all the other "leaders", "representatives" and "success stories". A political endorsement serves no purpose when you're a master deceiver. The Black power liberal crowd loves the White man when its convenient and quietly hates him at the same time.
ReplyDeleteJohn Sharp is just amazed that he's still alive. Dementia has take root and he know's he's only got another year or two before he kicks the bucket. We are anxiously awaiting his departure.
ReplyDeleteWhen Dinosaurs roamed the earth
ReplyDeleteI wonder when someone is going to let 3rd district residents know that Reed diverted $500,000 from its residents to assist in the failed "Green Impact Zone"? I guess he is a "success story" because he gives big business interests what they want and keep who he is supposed to represent in poverty. Got to give it to Reed however, he NEVER misses a big investors party, photo op, or his time under John Sharp's desk to get this endorsement overturned.
ReplyDeleteTeresa Loar is one courageous lady! We need her in office.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many of these guys have their pockets lines with the Monk Brothers money.
ReplyDeleteI understand now why Charlie Parker begged to not be returned to Kansas City under any circumstances.
ReplyDeleteSo they endorse the Slier James huh? That pretty much says it all right there.
ReplyDeleteSo they are cleaning up the corruption with these endorsements?
ReplyDeleteLMAO!
Usually I watch closely for Freedom Inc and Citizens Association endorsements so I will know for sure who not to vote for. This time I find myself agreeing with them.
ReplyDeleteout of 12 selections, only ONE made any sense at all...Scott Wagner. the rest are bogus
ReplyDeleteWhere are the Calebs, Peregrines, Smith Brother Coughdrop looking guys, and the toy train soccer people in those pics?
ReplyDeletecan't say what the endorsements mean in terms of numbers of votes in different parts of the city . . . It's impossible to quantify as a number or percentage but you can see by all of the interest we generate from the candidates tonight that they think it's important."
ReplyDeleteThe only important thing coming out of this process is identifying where social hour will be held. Citizens carries zero weight or credibility in the Third and Fifth Districts - and we're not sure they carry weight anywhere else in this town. Any association who publicly endorses a corrupt candidate like Theresa Ruiz will undoubtedly endorse other, more corrupt candidates. Citizen's political picks has the lure of entertainment value as found in most recent television shows like: Scandal, Empire or How to Get Away with Murder. It's strictly for entertainment purposes only.
Normal people will get up the next morning, go to work and wait for the next episode. The entertainment element, however, does not translate into political clout. People are much wiser than that. This list represents who NOT to vote for.
Treacherous friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat it means is this association basically supports and endorses the slow-motion murder of the poorest citizens, too. As heating costs & food costs & medical costs rise, and the laboring families can't meet those costs, their quality of life--and stress--facilitates all sorts of dis-eased conditions. Some, no doubt, deadly.
ReplyDeleteThe city of CKMO's politics is just plain seriously fucked up.
ReplyDeleteThat's what it means.
9:32 FTW
ReplyDeleteTeresa Loar signing a fair campaigning pledge is hilarious! Why didn't she suggest that during the Brice Harris campaign?
ReplyDeleteShe'll hold to that while she sends Steve Whorioso out to do her dirty work.
Don't sign it Jay. Everyone knows Loar is a liar. If you roll around with a pig like her you're gonna get dirty.
Teresa is harmless, it's Glover that's the real enemy. Nuff said.
