Kansas City, Missouri was founded in 1838 as "City of Kansas". The growth of the town easily outpaced nearby crosstown rival Westport as KCMO became the predominant city west of St. Louis.

"Kansas City, Mo., has a dynamic history, tracing its beginnings to the early 1800s when French fur traders, including Francois Chouteau, followed the Missouri River from St. Louis to the area now known as the Northeast Industrial District, where they established trading posts on the waterway. Another young trader, John Calvin McCoy, opened a store inland on the Santa Fe Trail. He considered his land a portal to the West and thus named it Westport."
Kansas City, Missouri, earned was official incorporated on March 28, 1853.

Technology plays a large part in creating equity and advancing our city, but I also believe that chasing it down with $$$$ is a mistake, and much of that money would be better spent developing strategies to reduce crime and improve education in our urban core.
ReplyDeleteThe Creative Class appreciates mobility and will ultimately settle down in a place where they are comfortable raising a family (hint: not in KC) whereas *immigrants* are the fastest growing demographic, and they tend to buy property in the urban core and invest in it.
I think having a strong working class trumps the possibility of being number 11 out of the Top 10 cities for millenials.
There will be another tech bubble and a new wave of home improvement will follow. What position will KC be in when that happens?
