MUST READ!!! TKC TIPSTER EXCLUSIVE!!! NORTHLAND KANSAS CITY SCHOOL SAFETY CRISIS IGNORED BY CITY HALL!!!

North Kansas City parents often earn a tragic teaching moment when they attempt to get local government involved in their struggle to make streets safer for their students.

To wit . . .

CHECK THIS TKC TIPSTER EXCLUSIVE FOLLOW-UP REGARDING A LONGSTANDING SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN IGNORED BY CITY HALL!!!

First, a bit of background . . .

Some great neighborhood reporting from KSHB noted parents working to step-up public safety for their kids walking to school: Parents push for change in North Kansas City neighborhood deemed unsafe for kids to walk to school

NOW HERE'S THE EXCLUSIVE TKC TIPSTER UPDATE . . . And a tragic lesson that local government really doesn't take the safety of young "scholars" seriously . . .

"We haven't been able to make any progress on this.

"I spoke with the North Kansas City School District last week about the possibility of them writing a letter of support for our next PIAC request (similar to what they did last year for another group) but they declined because we haven't received any commitments for the City or County to do the work.

"Last year we met with Clay County Commissioner Pam Mason, who shared with us that there was $1,000,000 remaining in the Searcy Creek TIF. We petitioned the KC TIF commission for some of the money to be used for our project, but instead a new stop light was installed along 48th Street for Winnetonka High School (literately moved the stop light from one entrance to the other), some sidewalks for another school and to Parvin Road improvements.

"Last week I emailed the City Manager's office to see if he could provide any assistance. I've also reached out to Senator McCaskill’s office, Senator Blunt’s office and Congressman Cleaver’s office. I only heard back from Blunt’s office and they suggested I reach out to our state senator and state representative. Just this week I've emailed State Senator Ryan Silvey and newly elected State Representative Nick King to see what assistance they could provide."

For folks interested in a quick civics lesson, this is another important passage that shows us developers and the politically connected can quickly earn action from our political elite but residents simply looking for better public safety have to wait in line for politicos to pay attention.

Here's hoping this post might help their efforts . . . With the tragic admission that it took about a week to write this up as well given that there was a lot of insider dirt and other gossip that our blog community was more concerned with as well. It's a tough world out there, look out for oncoming traffic young ones.

  2. Just ask for a TIF, claim the route is along the streetcar line, or promise to form your own CID.

    1. There is already a TIF, dipshit. Read the article. There's tifs all over the suburbs to subsidize that unsustainable garbage sprawl.
      Suburbs = welfare state

  3. When student lives 1 block from the school and have to be bused you have a problem. It's going to be hard to get PIAC money this year since $6 million of it was used to settle the Prospect North TIF lawsuit. Also if they just used 0.001% of the $1.2 billion for the new airport on improving this neighborhoods infrastructure most of the problem would be solved.

    1. They have to walk in the street because this neighborhood has no curbs or sidewalks and the roads have ditches on both sides of it.

  5. Wasn't it like tht when they moved in? Maybe the should never to neighborhoods with sidewalks next time, instead of stealing PIAC funds for their toy street vanity project that no one will ever use, except blacks and people who eat kale! I better get to vote in this! This is a "car town"!! If they want sidewalks they should move to Portland! If sidewalks were justified there, the developer would pay for them! As soon as their kids are out if school, all those Emily's and Todd's are going to move to somewhere with no yard to mow anyway!!! Sidewalks are a kind of Jim Crow! Why should the whole city have to pay for sidewalks few only a few people to use?

  6. There is no developer for this neighborhood. It predates annexation into Kansas City.

  7. You may be North of the River, but you are still in Kansas City and you get the same crappy city services as any other crappy neighborhood. Good luck!

  8. Hey guys, I just moved tot he stix, bought a sweeet split level that feels just like its 'out in the country'! One question though, why doesn't the taxbase of the city, which live in the Downtown, Midtown, Plaza and Brookside corridor pay for me and my 8 neighbors living in low-density, purposefully unwalkable "neighborhoods" to have all the same infrastructure they have in their densely built, walkable neighborhoods where many more people live and contribute to the tax base?"

    Sincerely,
Chad and Katie MacIntyre-Jones (and little Piper and Otis, too!)
