Kansas City 1 BILLION DOLLAR Toy Train Bet

Call this a money quote: "On Thursday, representatives of Kansas City's Business Customer Service Center told the Kansas City Streetcar Authority Inc. board that public and private entities have invested more than $1 billion since the 2.2-mile streetcar district was approved." Just imagine what that cash could have done in other parts of the urban core that really needed these resources: KC officials: $1B has gone Downtown since streetcar approved - Kansas City Business Journal

  5. Well great. Then there is no reason why City Hall should be nervous about complete and thorough audits of KCMO's fiances. After all we're rolling in money according to the who's who of trolly supporters quoted in this piece.

  6. Buses are public transportation, break-even Mensa boy (6:08).

They're cheaper and more flexible than streetcars. That's why our grandparents got rid of streetcars in favor of buses.

  7. that money would have went a long way to cover the cost of sewer and waterlines instead of taxing the older people

  9. Yes, but if we waste tax dollars on a stupid street car, we will all get a bronze plaque with our names on it somewhere. Same issue with a brand new airport. A bronze plaque with our names that will show everyone they did something big. And that is important to their feeble little minds.

  10. Ask yourself why suddenly that much money appeared downtown.

    busses certainly didn't bring it.

the bus system oversaw the decline of downtown

It might be instructive to do the arithmetic and see how much REAL PRIVATE money is being "invested" in downtown.
Start by backing out all the tax credits, TIFs, abatements, and other creative public financing mechanisms, and also how much debt the taxpayers are on the hook for.
Until investments begin to show a financial ability to service their debt and pay for operations and maintenance, there's no real success.
    It's all hype and promises.
    Time will tell.

  14. KCMO officials saying their Toy Train led to $1 Billion investment downtown

    is like saying

I smoked for 30 years (against the advice of family/friends/doctors) and ended up getting a $1 million dollar lung transplant operation!

    Isn't that great?

  15. from now on it should be called "The Sly James Billion Dollar Toy Train to NO Where" !!

  16. That money suddenly appeared downtown the same way money appeared to buy bonds under Quantitative Easing. Ex nihilo.

    Break even. As if!

  17. Anti-city/anti-transit playbook rule # 316;

When the facts inevitably prove you wrong, you have 2 moves:
    1.
Deny that plainly visible investment and improvement is already measurably occurring, or

    2.
Circulate a petition to make sure the voters who can see those investments and improvements with their own eyes and don't have to believe you fear/uncertainty/doubt propaganda cannot vote to bring those benefits to their own neighborhoods.

A combination if both is best, but the second option is most important. Otherwise it will be too late and your lies will only be believed by your small coalition of cranks, shills and self-interests

  18. Shove it down their throats playbook rules #1-6.

    When facts are nonexistent,

    (1) Claim a project that will not be completed on time, on schedule, or on budget is "already at break even." After all, people are such "fucking rubes" they won't have a clue what break even is.

    (2) Ignore voters (they're such "fucking rubes" they don't know what's good for them) who have said they at least want to see what the starter line looks at before committing the city to revert to 1900.

    (3) Claim "every other city in the universe" has a streetcar, and if we don't put one in, we're behind the times. After all, people are such "fucking rubes," they'll believe anything.

    (4) Claim that anyone who is opposed to public transit is being paid off by Rex Sinquefeld or has an illegally fenced in yard to protect.

    (5) Repeatedly deny that buses are mass transit. After all, as both Goebbels and Lenin said, "If a lie is told often enough it will become the truth."

    (6) Get a cushy job with a streetcar constructor.

  19. If a toy train is such a good investment for the city it should be able to pay it's own way rather than taking from tax payers and people on fixed income. Trying to take money away from NOT for Profits who are organized to help the unfortunate, is the opposite of a winning proposition.
