Kansas City Downtown Retail Urban Legend

In the era of online shopping and so many suburban retail specialty stores . . . 1. Yes - I go downtown to buy my Fedoras.

  2. Buildings that used to be office buildings and house retail and other businesses are being converted to apartments. And by far the largest employer downtown already is one level of government or another.
What jobs are being created? Housekeeping?
And how will all these apartment denizens get to places they can actually buy things?
The idea of a downtown as a center of commerce is being turned on its head.

  4. Organizations are wrong in its efforts to encourage people to visit the businesses and restaurants along the streetcar route. Construction zones can be very dangerous to visitors and workers alike. These are areas of confusing detours and heavy equipment that is not designed to be used in traffic areas. People should be respective of construction workers safety and avoid the areas if at all possible. Merchants may want to work with City Hall to insure that they start to live up to their promise that construction would be done one block at a time.

  5. Maybe Sherri, Ralph and Patty should go to every store closing like they do the ribbon cutting ceremony. They caused this mess!
