And once again this fun fact is worth repeating in order to offer a more realistic perspective . . .
While the numbers are thankfully declining . . . In 2014 about 12% of homeless adults are veterans
There's also a great deal of mental health problems among the homeless . . . The reality is that people living on the street have a lot of problems . . . Homeless advocates throughout Kansas City have trained their workers to keep a safe distance from the homeless and work safely in groups in order to serve this needy population. Like it or not, these still need food and there are MANY PEOPLE IN KANSAS CITY FIGHTING WITH CITY HALL TO FEED THE HOMELESS . . . Tragically, not even dead tree media will put this struggle in context and instead simply run a smear campaign directed mostly at advocate for the less fortunate.
This tawdry, unprincipled and despicable tactic devised by the City Manager's office is reason enough to believe every bad thing people have ever said about the guy.
Stereotyping, trashing and attacking the homeless during the holidays in a campaign devised by city officials is one of the lowest points in the local discourse so far in 2014 and a sign that City Hall AND DEAD TREE MEDIA have completely lost touch with the generous and good nature of people in Kansas City.
Careful with these scamps, they can bite. keep your distance and you'll be alright.
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly care why these folks are homeless. Be it their own fault, or just a bad set of circumstances. I'm just thankful I am not in that position. And no matter how much I try to ignore them, I can't seem to shake good 'ol sunday school.

ReplyDeleteThese laws and rules are not heartless. It's misguided compassion that is at fault. I work the Northeast area and we have the volunteers come in with food trucks. The end result? Trash everywhere.
ReplyDeleteSome group also thought it was a good idea to give bicycles to homeless? End result? They could expand their territory to find more vacant houses to break into for scrap and can more easily get to the scrapyards.

Well I'm a do-good conservative. I prefer the Catholic Worker House, but given the choice between a starving child, and trash on the streets. I will choose trash on the streets any day of the week. You paint all homeless with a broad brush. There are many, many homeless that do things you describe. But I invite you down to the Catholic Worker House, you will be amazed at the number of children that are homeless. The homelessness in America is not as rampant as some on the left would like for you to believe, but it is real nonetheless.
ReplyDeletePerhaps its not an either/or proposition. With a few more helping hands maybe we could feed the hungry and have clean streets. But with so few volunteers these organizations have to prioritize.
ReplyDeleteIt's sure an odd coincidence that among all the homeless, a group of them who are sex offenders just happen to meet up, and they all just happen to live near an elementary school. What are the odds of that happening randomly? One in a million? One in 10 million? incredible coincidence.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure its such an odd coincidence. Some of these camps tend to be rather large, and like the post said, many of the shelters won't accept sex offenders. There are a few "shanty-towns" that act as hubs with smaller encampments around town.

ReplyDelete10:04 I'm not in anyway referring to the shelters and places that help families and children, as well as truly needy singles. There are no children being fed in the circumstances I am referring to. These are regulars we are constantly dealing with. Many with drug and mental issues, which I am not knocking.

I can dig that 11:10. We don't live in a philosophical "theory-land", we live in a practical world, and you make a valid point of practicality.
ReplyDeleteWe should take care to differentiate between the involuntarily homeless and the voluntarily homeless. The latter group are better referred to as "bums." Help the homeless get back on their feet. Ignore the bums.
