TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY 3RD DISTRICT AT-LARGE CANDIDATE QUINTON LUCAS CREATES IMPRESSIVE EARLY ELECTION LEAD!!!

Quinton Lucas is quite possibly the most impressive new Kansas City candidate for Council.

In his opening round of fundraising he raised $45K, the Ivy League Law school he attended touts him as one of their top success stories and during a recent EXCLUSIVE interview with TKC, it seems that Mr. Lucas decided to forgo a teaching fellowship in London in order to launch his City Council campaign.

Recently, Mayor Sly James appointed Mr. Lucas to the Kansas City Board of Zoning Adjustment and that sparked a serious consideration of political life for the young contender.

"I think at a certain point there was a decision to try and contribute beyond just writing checks to other candidates and going to fundraising events," Mr. Lucas remembered. "I don't have anything against other elected leaders but I felt like it was time for a new direction for political representation for the 3rd District."

The confidence that Mr. Lucas exudes is justified given that behind the scenes, Freedom, Inc. leaders are trying to figure out how to throw their support behind the campaign leader and politely talk their own members out of the election contest. Beyond the 3rd District, it's worth noting that Quinton Lucas has already garnered the attention of Northland leaders who are anxious to partner with newer 3rd District politicos. In terms of citywide representation, Mr. Lucas often references his humble upbringing and single mother as he claims: "At one point or another I lived all over this city, so I think that perspective gives me an advantage to run as an at-large candidate."

Still, it's not just the impressive credentials of Mr. Lucas which make his candidacy formidable - Even a brief conversation with Quinton Lucas reveals a complex understanding about the reality of Kansas City politics and how it shapes both City Hall and the elected officials. Notice that the vast majority of donations to the Lucas campaign are from law school and professional colleagues which doesn't bind him to the usual suspect law firms that run City Hall . . . Quinton Lucas isn't a Rev. and he's not related to the many East side power broker families who have dominated 3rd District politics for generations. Mr. Lucas didn't draw much attention to these facts of his campaign but he didn't deny them either.

It's fair to note some skepticism about the Quinton Lucas connection to the community and insiders worry that he's too friendly with longtime local consultant Pat Gray - Those issues could prove challenging but not major stumbling blocks given that more than any other candidate running for council - Quinton Lucas has proved impressive and eager to compete in the Kansas City political scene by way of his elite Ivy League law school background and fundraising skill.

  2. Just a thought:
How about electing someone who is interested in learning about public policy and wants to serve the city's residents instead of yet another zero who wants to start "a political life" and is already cozying up to the same old tired political consultants.
Same old wine in a kinda new bottle.

  3. Not related to any Eastside family... Uhhh? The Lucas clan who have been the Freedom, Inc. and Jermaine Reed cheerleaders for the past three years. - ie Ricardo Lucas, whose only claim to fame is assembling a handful of parcels for the new "grocery store" at 39th Prospect. Besides that - and he'll tell you he personally built houses in Kansas City - that really should be torn down - he builds houses too!

  4. I met Quinton, and I have to admit that he doesn't seem quite like the old and tired leaders who normally run for office around here. I can't see any harm in giving him an opportunity to serve.
