TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN REPORTING STANDARDS CONTRIBUTE TO DRAMATIC DECLINE IN KANSAS CITY HOMICIDE NUMBERS!!! OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTINGS RULED 'JUSTIFIED' NO LONGER COUNT!!!

Politicos in Kansas City are touting sharply declining homicide numbers but FAIL to mention some rather significant changes in reporting standards.

To wit . . .

SPECIAL THANKS TO KCPD INSIDERS FOR HELP IN OFFERING JUST A GLIMPSE OF SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO HOMICIDE REPORTING IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Brief TKC observation . . . While politicos are busy chest thumping, pay attention to authorities who are much more cautious in their talk about declining violence in KC Proper. If reduced crime is going to become an election issue, then the public has the right to know the whole story.

Accordingly, here's the first important passage from Kansas City Police Department Insiders regarding recent reporting changes:

"There have been no changes to way homicides are counted. I believe your question pertains to what has become known as the blue sheet, the Investigation Bureau's daily homicide numbers: The numbers reported each year to the State are based on Uniform Crime Reporting standards. These are the official numbers. The blue sheet recently changed to reflect homicides using UCR standards of reporting"

So the CHANGE has been to the reporting and not the counting. Another insider asked an important question . . . Has this reporting change been applied to all previous years so that we can have an accurate set of data to compare and contrast (???). . . Just a brief look at the "Blue sheet" would suggest that the answer is no.

For me, here's the most important passage:

"The blue sheet had previously included officer involved shootings that had been ruled justified. However, UCR numbers count only criminal homicides, not ones that have been ruled justified."

And so . . .

WITH "JUSTIFIED" HOMICIDES OUT OF THE MIX . . . THE BLUE SHEET NO LONGER GIVES AN ACCURATE GAUGE OF VIOLENCE ON LOCAL STREETS BUT INSTEAD IS MERELY A STATISTICAL TOOL!!!

Moreover . . .

KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS NEED AN ACCURATE COUNT OF ALL HOMICIDES ON LOCAL STREETS AVAILABLE ONLINE . . . SO FAR THAT DOESN'T EXIST!!!

Again, KCPD has been EXCEPTIONALLY FORTHRIGHT AND COOPERATIVE in relaying this information . . . We're just writing e-mails and asking. Today's post was inspired by a lot of political hype about the homicide decline WITHOUT ANY DETAILED EXPLANATION BEHIND THE NUMBERS or any questions from the MSM.

Honestly, this stuff should be covered by mainstream media newsies but they really aren't asking these questions any longer. This post merely hopes to inspire a bit more critical thinking about the numbers without blindly accepting the data or talking points from any politico.

UNTIL ALL OF THE KANSAS CITY HOMICIDE DATA IS PUBLICLY AVAILABLE POLITICOS SHOULDN'T ASK VOTERS TO BELIEVE THE HYPE ABOUT A DRAMATIC DECLINE IN HOMICIDES!!! ALSO, ACKNOWLEDGING RECENT REPORTING CHANGES THIS YEAR WOULD BE NICE TOO!!!

Luckily, there's good news here . . . KCPD insiders tell us . . .

"A database is being developed that will allow the automated retrieval of up to date numbers on all information for each inclusive year."

Hopefully this database will be made available to the public because newsies are no longer willing to ask tough questions so it's up to KCPD to keep voters informed rather than promote the economic development agenda of mostly failing politicos.

Developing . . .

  1. Don't be a total stat geek TKC. there is no money ball for fighting crime and you don't have the charisma of Jonah Hill.

    1. Great. If I wasn't confused enough already with "teens", "flash mobs", and "fight clubs" now I have to deal with more coded language. Let me guess, pack your team (city) with "guys who get on base" (non blacks) and avoid "strike outs" (blacks). This shit is getting too confusing.

  2. Although the Polar Bear considers most of your postings to be "MISSIVE" or "OUR PAL CRAIG", this one has some teeth.

Who passed these questions along ?

Sounds like the 12th & Oak crowd is playing some "creative quanitational equations" on the dumb ass voters of Killa City.

Where the Bear comes from, dead is dead.

With Union Station withering under the watchful eye of the taxpayers, it would appear that George Guestello's UMKC "creative financing professors" are writing crime statistics for S'Lie.

Just the observations from the hills of the Ozarks after a couple of quarts of good old poison berry shne.

    Belch, belch, fart, yawn......snore.

  4. No surprise that KCMO is doing something crooked where city officials are concerned. And the number of homicides aside, I'd still like to know where the number of non-fatal shootings ranks with last year. IMO, the non-fatal shootings are the worst because most of the thug victims are hospitalized and treated then go on disability for the rest of their lives, all on the taxpayer's dime.

    1. Oh yeah, it's pretty much an established fact that a city can not have public transportation and also be safe!

There are literally NO cities that har both. It's impossible.

And it's also a serious really truly fact that the 2 things are DIRECTLY related totally fr sure seriously fact.

    2. New York city is pretty safe.

  6. The question is, "Why the change if not to reduce the number of killings in the public eye?" Second, are we going to get reports on how many people are shot and killed by police?

  7. Fun With Statistics9/18/14, 10:30 AM

    .......and in related news

Federal government reports that there continues to be NO inflation!!

Of course, anyone who buys everyday consumer items knows this to be false, but if the FEDS say there's no inflation, then they won't have to pay cost of living adjustments and they save billions!!

  8. Two things you'll never see from the City: Accurate reporting of anything, and the homicide solve-rate per detective. God-forbid we get numbers that provide data like a batting average... too many detectives would go back to the minor leagues... of course, Ward Parkway Mall could use some extra Mall-cops.

  9. STATISTICAL TOOLs are used by police and sheriff depts to apply for grants. Nothing is more abused in city governments than grant money.

  10. Healthy dose of totally ignorant internet experts today in tonys Johnson county/Stormfront-lite!

Guess all the amateur lawyers from the ward parkway became amateur statisticians last night in their sleep.

    SMART, CK. Real SMART...

  11. I agree, 11:29. That trolley train that they're spending a fortune on won't be operating a week before someone is killed, raped or mugged on it. Good grief, they have to have those plainclothes monitors ride the city busses to break up fights and assaults. With the exception of real cities (i.e. huge populations, NYC/Chicago), any sort of mass transit is for the poor and they're going to bring their riff raff ways with them when they use it.

  13. Tony, I told you Daryl Forte is a paid liar for the City and the Police Department. Don't expect much integrity from the guy. This pony show can only last so long before people get hip; but if you look at everything he has touched it was conditioned upon him being dishonest.

  14. Idiot: by definition "justified office shooting" is not a homicide.

  15. I guess if I shot someone and investigated myself it would be justified too. No Brainer there.
