ReplyDeleteAfter the mayor calling him a killer who was acquitted for Tabitha Brewer and Nick Travis at the press conference (legalese here: an acquittal is a closed record in MO), Howells legal team, which he will get courtesy of the state, should it be charged as a death penalty case, will request and potentially get a change of venue.
ReplyDeleteAlso, he will probably provide info on where Tabithas body is in exchange for a guilty plea and death penalty off the table. He is a psychopath and this is his way of feeling in control.
A death penalty case carries such a high bar and will be scrutinized to the t with a lot of leeway going to the defendant. Best thing for this is the above described plea deal.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the death penalty is morally wrong. We all have the impulse to jump in and punish someone, but that is not how our legal system works. We can't have open and shut cases. And, there may be reasons not to consider a capital case. The prosecutor is in a bad position because she has to balance community anger, and the need for due process. Remember how you conservatives always talk about the constitution? Well, this is the constitution in action. We don't light people up or string them up to christmas trees.

And I know this from experience...my sister was murdered by a kid she was dating. We harbored hate toward him for many years. He eventually killed himself in prison. After struggling with this for many years, I came to the realization that more murder solves nothing.
