HERE'S SOME IMPORTANT KANSAS CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT INFO URGING NEIGHBORHOOD ACTIVISTS TO STOP REPAINTING FIRE HYDRANTS!!!

This public info posted by a KCFD veteran started an important conversation and even a bit of push back in a local social media neighborhood group. Check it:

"While I appreciate efforts to beautify our neighborhoods, re-painting fire hydrants can hinder public safety, and that of (The KCFD). I am seeing more and more of this type of redecorating in our district. We use different paint schemes to identify hydrants that are out of service, likely to leak into a business or residence, and to tell us what size main the hydrant sits on.

"Three am. with fire and/or people jumping out the windows is not the time to find out the plug in front of the house or on the corner doesn't work.

"Any delay in getting water is a potentially life-threatening matter. We inspect plugs every year, but have nothing to do with their repair, and we can't always tell a plug is out of service by looking at it, unless it has been marked as such. Help us help you. Don't paint your fire hydrants!"

  7. The National Fire Protection Association recognizes that in the case of an emergency, the properties of different fire hydra must be immediately recognizable to fire officials and the general public.

The NFPA specifies that fire hydrants be painted visible colors like chrome yellow, bright red, white, etc. Due to functional differences in municipal and private hydrant systems, the NFPA states they must be painted different colors and suggests red for private systems and chrome yellow for municipal systems.

Furthermore, violet has been established as the official color for indicating a non-portable system. The bonnets and caps must be color coded to indicate the hydrant’s ability to flow at 20 p.s.i. The standard color codes are as follows:

    Less than 500 GPM=Red
    500-599=Orange
    1000-1499= Green
    1500+ GPM = Light Blue

Again, the NFPA has established these standards so that the different types of fire hydrants can be identified by both fire officials, and the general public.

    Read it Morons.

Kansas City, Missouri Spec Early hydrants, the "KCM Spec", were made to a water department design. Current practice is to buy off the shelf hydrant models configured to their specific needs; the "KC-1 Spec". The steamer nozzles are all 4". By specification, the operating stem must open to the right.

Within the City limits of Kansas City, MO hydrants are color coded.
An orange barrel hydrant with black cap(s) indicates a normal, working fire hydrant.
A silver barrel fire hydrant indicates that the hydrant, when opened, will flood a nearby building or basement.
A red bonnet indicates that the hydrant is attached to a 4 inch water main.
A black bonnet indicates that the hydrant is attached to a 6 or 8 inch water main.
A green bonnet indicates that the hydrant is attached to a 12 inch or greater water main.
White paint indicates that the hydrant is inoperable.

  12. I saw case where it took fireman almost 15 minutes to get a hydrant open that was painted shut.

By then the house was pretty much going up in flames.

  22. White people do the darndest things when they are in an Urban setting. I've never once seen one fire hydrant painted in a suburban area. Note to stupid white people: CUT IT OUT!!!!! Keep your fairy flower power in Olathe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So the issue isn't painting fire hydrants. The issue is the god damn city would rather argue about trains than maintain basic infrastructure. The real issue is not lack of safety dues to a paint job, it is lack of safety due to bureaucrats not doing what they are paid to do. Now why the fuck would people vote for a heard of shit bags like those running this town?
