Humorless Kansas City Art Scene Defenders Pretty Much Prove The Onion Joke Correct

Here's a quote that seems fun lighthearted, cheerful and carefree but actually proves the main point of the offending Onion article which was that our flyover cowtown art world takes itself far too seriously. Check the fact check of a parody article: "To be called out by The Onion indicates that the Nelson-Atkins is on the national radar," said director and CEO Julián Zugazagoitia. "Here in Kansas City, we know how to take a ribbing, even one that is not BBQ related." Check it: Nelson Responds To The Onion, 12 Picassos In Collection

The irony is that the Nelson is probably the only thing in Kansas City that truly can be rated as "world class." It's one of the country's great art museums, on a par with those in Chicago, New York and Fort Worth (another hick town, but one with a better and more generous class of rich people than we have). Still, like everyone else in Kansas City, the Nelson people have a huge inferiority complex.

Good point. KC has nothing to be ashamed about where the Nelson is concerned. Of course, it's a town that is much more interested in the Chiefs than in art.

So we have 12 Picasso's but the only one on display has been loaned to us. What sense does that make? Do we only own shitty Picasso's we're too embarrassed to display which would make The Onion not parody at all.

Perhaps all involved should go the The Talk Shop to talk it out.

Beer is a bigger draw.

Ha! The Talk Shop.

Just so as they present a "super diverse" dialogue.
