This 3rd District thing seems like the sleeper campaign of the season that has suddenly come into full view.
ReplyDeleteMy take: when one candidate has this much cash advantage, this quick, it's game over. Most businesses, law firms, and other major donors play it safe until a "winning horse" emerges, and then they suddenly are all clammoring to jump aboard.
Expect that to happen with this Lucas guy. None of the civic elite who cares about where their money goes is going to bet on anyone else.
The others in the race are washouts, e.g., Evans, Coleman, etc.
Rea may actually have a future in KC politics. But he can't start with an embarrassing loss.
Don't know the guy, but according to this Blog it sounds like he's in the early stages of his career, as is Lucas. Rea's smartest move is to save face and live to fight another day, i.e., say he used the last quarter to assess his priorities in his career, and has decided that running for office is not the best way to serve KC at this point. Withdraw and (presumably) endorse the clear winner, Lucas, and create a friend instead of a bunch of enemies.
Rea may think this is embarrassing, but it is not. It is called smart politics. If he bows out now, people will respect him. If he burns bridges now, he will lose anyway, and his career in politics is over.
Discretion is the greater part of valor.
I have a career move for Rea: intern to Quinton Lucas. And since Quinton cares about people, Quinton might even give him his first paid job.
