Southwest: The Forgotten Year?
As you know we, Wornall Road Baptist, are highly invested in the kids at southwest. While we are eager to ensure better schools in our city and we applaud the district at least looking to try new things we have the following concern.
Many of us in Brookside have supported the kids at Southwest with our time, our hearts and our money. While the school has a history of chaos to be sure, there are hundreds of kids who attend there every day with a single desire to learn. We know, we have met with them and worked with them. With all of the current news and discussion concerning the future of Southwest it is imperative that we acknowledge the importance of 700 students at Southwest who will begin school on August 11. We can not allow this year to become a forgotten year. For each student this year is vitally important. Imagine being a junior on the football team and not knowing where you will go to school next year, your senior year. These are already some of the most at risk youth in our city. We cannot allow this to become a lost year for these kids.
Concerning the possible new charter school at Southwest in 2015, it might be best for the current students if they could be allowed to remain in Southwest until they graduate even if a new charter school were to begin in 2015. Operate a school within a school for three years to allow a full transition of the current students to take place. Of course the issues of security and building safety would have to be addressed and solved.
Concerning this year, our church has greatly increased our commitment to the kids at Southwest for this year. We have already begun to serve the sports teams and we are working toward creative ways to help these kids experience the best high school year of their lives. In a city with a chronic problem of out of control teens there is no downside to reasonable and caring adults investing time and energy in the lives of these kids.
Southwest has no booster club to help with its sports programs so our church working with others in the community seeks to provide everything these kids need to stay involved in sports. We know that kids who stay in sports are far more likely to graduate then those who don't. Sunday July 20 at 7PM we are hosting the 3rd annual Brookside Bluegrass festival. The single purpose of this event is to raise money to support the students and sports programs at Southwest.
All proceeds go to support these kids.Provides pregame meals for football and basketball, provides fall and spring sports banquets, provides 5th quarter parties (which we have had with NO problems of any kind), provides cleats and equipment for kids who can't afford it. Provides team and individual sports photos, provides new uniforms for some of the teams and many other needs throughout the year. As a result of all of this work real and meaningful friendships and mentor relationships have developed between some of these kids and residents of Brookside. That is a real story and one most local print media never mention. All proceeds from the Bluegrass event serve these kids and none of stays with us or our church. It's ,encouraging to see some attention paid to the kids who are really trying, working hard, and want to make something of themselves instead of the constant excuses for the minority who have already thrown their lives away with bad decisions, worse behavior, and ridiculous demands that everyone else do something for them, even as they do nothing to help themselves.

That's why both the schools and the police are there.
It's time to reopen Westport and let the trouble makers go there

ReplyDeleteGood to see a church get involved. Too bad the catholic churches in the area won't lend a hand. Too busy opening up cash advanced places I guess.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the controversy here? The school's a mess and the fight about what to do with it will likely continue long into the next school year, so a group of well intentioned people is stepping up to help in the interim and provide whatever help they can for the current students.
