Former Mayor Kay Barnes deserves far greater recognition
Disagree about her big money policy . . There's no denying her legacy and development-obsessed influence on Kansas City and our current Mayor who is still trying to live up to her skillz.
It's hard to see how much skill it takes to use someone else's money to subsidize a supposedly commercial project that then can't support itself and requires help from the tax payers for decades.
ReplyDeleteAnd there are far more of them than just the P&L District that are sucking bucks out of taxpayers pockets each and every day.
So vote for all the sales tax increases and keep that e-tax money coming.

The Barnes administration gave away a long series of tax exemptions. And there lies the problem.
The city budget is stressed because Barnes and successive Councils shielded developers from having to pay their fair share of the cost of civil society.
This anti-tax fetish that you have been jacking off to since Funkhouser left you without a freak show to write about has trashed your vision.
Like a blind-beggar with a tambourine you pound out noise to attract the attention of greed-heads and bigots, and call yourself a political blogger.

They decided they needed to abandon Kemper Arena while still owing major dollars on it, to build a brand spanking new arena downtown, using the same talking points currently being misused by Sly & Co. for the ToyTrain....it's about "economic development" and "bringing more residents downtown"...well...I'm still waiting on that promised pro sports tenant, and the city wastes how many millions a year subsidizing the Power & Light District each year?
FACT: Politicians like Barnes and James are brain-damaged psychologically needy malcontents who desperately want their name associated with building something...ANYTHING...new and shiny! Taxpayers and commonsense be damned!
RECOGNITION?? Hell, anyone can sit around on a fat ass a dream up crap to blow money on. If she sooooo saved out asses with her innovation why is it the city soooooooo sicks with her out of office less than a decade. You want to give someone recognition just find a politician who can actually reduce spending, reduce annexing to increase the tax base and figure out a way for a podunk Plains town to live within it's means without choaking and swindling the shit out of its owns citizens. Barnes was little more than a PTA mother way out of her league.
