KCUR offers this really interesting report on how City Hall will justify giveaways in the future: "Kansas City's development incentives policy becomes more structured under a measure passed by the city council Thursday. The city will adopt a scorecard system to determine which projects get incentives and how large those incentives are."

Kansas City Mayor, Council and the entirety of the city administration is a criminal enterprise.

  4. Here in Moscow-on-the-Missouri, it is always entertaining to watch our elected rulers try to pick winners only to have the market smack them upside the head on every single attempt.

Pro tip: make the business environment favorable for everyone rather than just the fortunate few at the expense of all the rest. Face it, none of you (our rulers) have any qualifications to even begin to understand what businesses or industries have the potential to succeed.

So... get out of the way. Create a fair business environment that competes as a whole against our geographic neighbors rather than lavishing gifts upon the next new thing.

  5. But creating a good business environment would involve pretty much the same things as making the city more livable for the residents:
Safe neighborhoods, good streets and sidewalks, a well-managed water department, common sense business regulations, stormwater management, and all the rest.
But KCMO would need an actual city government to address those kinds of issues and what it has instead is a managerie of elected clowns who don't even try to learn about city government, much less make it better.
And like any failing enterprise, when you don't have much to sell, you try to be successful by giving everything away.
So if you have a great idea for a real estate "project", but find yourself short on cash, come on down. The ATM's always open.

  6. Just for kicks anyone care to run the recent Burns & Mac megacash giveaway through this matrix so we can see how it would have scored?
