Rather than dictate the conversation, this KICK-ASS KANSAS CITY BLOG wants to facilitate just a bit of discussion on yet another crisis that local bureaucrats and politicos have created.

THIS MORNING WE'RE ASKING THE KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY: IS IT TIME TO CANCEL THE FREE DAY @ THE KANSAS CITY ZOO?!?!
Don't be so sure of any answer . . . But here's just a bit of background.
The KC Zoo free day was the result of a win on a FOREVER TAX imposed on Jackson and Clay County to finance improvements and amenities.
Before the predictable and mostly uncreative racial mud-slinging gets started, let's not forget that the architect of the Zoo Tax campaign was none other than Kansas City GOP Machiavelli Jeff Roe . . . It was kind of his "coming out party" into so-called elite local politics and a sign that he was now open for biz and taking local high roller cash.
The newspaper celebrated his "mainstream" success despite the fact that Mr. Roe had already been running an IMPRESSIVE national GOP operation for many years.
Now, obviously Jeff Roe had nothing to do with the current FREE DAY hot mess but it's important to look at all the fingerprints on this disaster.
As for the Kansas City Zoo Free Days so far . . . They have all been horrific so far, so much so that they were even moved away from weekends. However, this Spring Break episode reveals that the Zoo Free Day has been one of the most ill-conceived Kansas City political patronage plans since the Pendergast days. The petty attempt at voter reward failed to realize a common sense axiom that TOP NON-PROFIT INSIDERS have shared with us. The simple saying goes: "If people don't pay for something, they don't value it and it really means nothing to them." Therein lies the whole "Teach a man to fish" truism that applies to this situation, Country Club Plaza violent teen flash mob prevention efforts by way of pizza party and so many other ideas hatched in this town geared on making people dependent on government at a very early age.

Right now Zoo officials are wavering and the misinformed are lobbying to keep KC Zoo Free Days without listening to VOTERS.
But again, that's simply the sitch . . . Now we're asking our blog community . . .

The problem is that the taxpaying public is expected by the welfare state to provide a free babysitting service for all the little accidents that not being smart enough to use a condom causes. Instead of blaming everybody else why not place the blame and shame where it belongs. The solution is not to keep pandering to this group but to make them take responsibility for their own lack of ambition. Limit the free taxpayer days to the people who actually pay taxes, not the ones who owe their existence to them. No more free babysitting services. Make mommy or daddy required to be with their brood in order for anyone under 18 to be there. I have always liked doing things with my children. Why is this certain group the exact oposite?

5:46 You're on the right track but didn't go far enough. Of course they aren't voters but more important, they aren't taxpayers. The free day is supposed to be a reward for approving the zoo tax. But like everything else that black people touch it has been ruined. Yes, the free day should be cancelled but it doesn't solve the larger problem of black people don't know how to behave civil period. Think about how low expectations are. Everybody just wants you to not fight, shoot people, and be respectful of others. It's not difficult. Every other race does it yet they fail. Every. Single. Time. Either way, the victimization mentality emphasizes that "good and bad" whites are simply opposite sides of the same racist coin.

Admissions aren't what fund the zoo. The point of charging admission is to keep poor people out. Aspiring to have amenities that are not available to every one except on special days is the kind of inequality that has led to this.

I am sure that many people thought that with a Black President and Black Attorney General that we would be entering a post racial period where relations between the races would approve and the past wounds of segregation and Jim Crowe would close and heal. I didn't vote for this tax, and I don't visit the zoo more than once every few years.
If I live in Jackson County why does my adult admission cost the same as a visitor from another state?
The zoo should not exist unless it can support itself through revenues generated, sponsorships, etc.
The same applies to Starlight Theater, the sports stadiums, etc. These are NOT necessities like streets, water, sewer, etc. Let those who choose to use the optional amenities pay for their existence and NOT all taxpayers! The mindset is all wrong on these taxes and I hope people start getting MAD AS HELL and NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!!!

Have no interest in shopping, doing business or visiting friends at the Plaza, OP, Mission, or the Legends. No interest spending 50-100 for a meal to listen to blasting car stereos and gangs of kids looking for trouble ruining the trip. ReplyDeleteIf people file taxes and pay the usage tax they should get a free voucher sent to the home per number of deductible persons with a social security number.
ReplyDeleteIf you own a company or business in the usage tax area vouchers should be sent to them as well. They should only send vouchers to the companies and business based on employees allowed reported amount of social security numbers. People that work in the usage tax area pay it and deserve to go to the zoo free even if they don't live the area.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with marketing the zoo to companies and business. The zoo could offer company memberships to allow purchases of discounted tickets. See, if the employee gets a free ticket, you gotta buy tickets for everybody else, so you might as well get a company discount.
They could offer coupons for merchandise in the KC star.
They could build a better parking lot. The parking lot could be huge, have lights, and be very large. They have the land. They do need more parking. The parking lot could have a transport system to take people from the parking lot to the zoo, such as a zoo express transport system like a toy train, since these people seem crazy about trains.
They need to sell birthday party packages. They need to sell special tours like other zoos do.
They could provide veterans,civil and community groups discounts. They could have free for people over age 65 or 70 days.
They are not doing their part to use the zoo for its maximum market. They could make money on it if they cared.

ReplyDeleteWe have these same types of problems caused by the same group in St. Louis in an area known as the Loop. There is a light rail stop very near the Loop and Friday & Saturday nights it's a police state there. And it's mainly young people under 21, unescorted by parents etc. There is nothing for these kids, the Loop is an area of restaurants and bars, and these ruffians just hang out, intimidate, fight and cause problems.

By the way the Feds just ponied up $25 million for a 2.2 mile Loop trolley for the thugs to ride up and down Delmar Blvd. on.
