Right now, KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS offer a brief lesson in recent eco-devo history that should put new KCI single-terminal plans in perspective with the understanding that the idea originates from pretty much the same crew who advocated the P&L District that now costss town nearly $20 million a year.

"Jon Stephens, the CEO of the KC Convention and Visitors Association shows up at the KCI Task Force meeting and says the airport is "dinky" and that convention planners don't like it. When cross-examined though, he says that he cannot recall a convention that was lost due to the airport. So yet one more politician (yes KCCVA and the Chamber are political organizations, not business organizations) who wants something shiny with other people's money. Should we be surprised? I think not. After all, before his KCCVA gig, Mr. Stephens was Marketing Director and President of, wait for it, the Power & Light District. Can someone say, "track record?"

Sly alks about a "world class" city, but somehow he thinks that that depends on spending lots of tax money and building all sorts of bright shiny new things.
ReplyDeleteBut what being a serious professionally-managed location and a great place to live, do business, and visit really depends on are the people involved governing the city and running operations like the Chamber and the Visitors' Bureau.
And on that count, KCMO is bush league, amateurish, incompetent, and downright embarrassing.
How long do you think a guy like this would be working for Mr. Son at Sprint?

ReplyDeleteSorry dude, but if we were not paying off the mess you left us downtown, we could almost afford to build you a new airport. In fact, if we do something at KCI, we likely won't have the money anymore to cover P&L so you might need to pick-up that tab for us. That ok, Buddy?

ReplyDeleteThis is what we deserve! We place untested individuals with no business experience in the positions to make key business decisions for the Voters. What do you expect? Let's get rid of the whole bunch, starting with City Hall and work our way through the system. We have six Council Members termed out. Let's get businessmen and women in those jobs NOW and elect a Mayor with a strong business background.

It actually seems like the "everything is better somewhere else" crowd is the one trying to force things on us we can't afford using "everything is better somewhere else, so we gotta catch up" mantra.

ReplyDeletethe taxpayers pay for the infrastructure that makes business possible. its terribly arrogant to think that businesses would survive without some of their expenses being offset by taxpayer support. especially as the border war races to see that biz owners contribute as little to roads, safety, and infrastructure as possible and its all passed off onto the taxpayer.
these schemes are mostly about spending so much they have to cut pensions. its a scam run by the financial industry, which is still operated by the same people who crashed the economy in 2008 and should probably be in jail.
In a candid response the4 mayor promised to acquire a pro wrestling team to hold matches at the airport on Thursday nights. Several civic groups immediately got behind the mayors program.

ReplyDeleteOf course there was NO discussion at all of the taxpayers having to pony up $10-20 million for decades to subsidize the P&L District.
It was going to be yet another "public/private partnership" that would be so attractive and financially successful that it would actually bring in tax money for KCMO.
And it was either a fantasy, a hoodwinking of amateur city hall folks yet again l[playing developer, or a lie.
In any case it's costing taxpayers in KCMO millions.
How much of this kind of "success" can you stand?

ReplyDeleteWhenever we "cavemen" point out the cost of a project, the reply is always the same. "Yes, but it is a good project." No it is not, especially if even the proponents cannot explain how a particular project is going to pay for itself.
