TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY TRANSIT ACTIVIST CLAY CHASTAIN CALLS FOR TOY TRAIN STREETCAR FULL STOP!!!

TKC NOTE: Check out the latest from activist Clay Chastain getting a bit bolder in his opposition to competing streetcar plans . . .

City must stop construction of 2.2 mile streetcar line!!

Hear ye hear ye,

The city must immediately stop construction of its 2.2 mile streetcar line until a vote is taken on expanding it.

Unless I am blind, there is growing opposition to the city's plan to expand its streetcar system...whose 2.2 mile starter line was forced upon the community in a very restricted election... by imposing on citizens south of the river a whopping one-cent sales tax!!

If voters reject expanding the 2.2 mile streetcar line then it would essentially render it an isolated, stand-alone boondoggle of no real value to transit or the community.

Mayor James and City Councilman Johnson's unversed voyage into urban planning...especially without city-wide consensus...is on course to sending $125 million of local and federal tax dollars down the ship's drain.

Perhaps it poetic justice if the city council...who has also been scheming to bury a competing light rail initiative in the courts...is
forced to repeal its own transit system just like it did a voter-approved light rail initiative in 2006!

  1. You forgot to point out that Clay has gotten more votes than Sly and Russ. That's always worth remembering.

  2. Maybe people would take him more seriously if he didn't say things like "hear ye."

  3. I agree stop the insanity.

  4. Slug James will never be re-elected.

  5. I agree we should stop the toy train before the digging starts, but Clay has his facts wrong about the financing mechanism. It's a whopping 1% sales tax plus a likely to be found illegal special assessment on a select group of properties.

  6. Damn! I wonder how Worlds of Fun ever made it without a Trolley

    Hey cutie...

    You're blind.

  9. We have had enough of new taxes. Citizens don't want this goddamned streetcar, and to prove it, we will vote every asshole out of office, including this worthless mayor, who supports the streetcar. Mayor james was elected to represent the people, instead, he is ignoring the people and advancing his own agenda.

This streetcar foolishness will be sly james' political undoing.

  10. Sly's just an empty-headed cheerleader and the streetcar "urban futurists'" gradiose dream happened to be something they managed to peddle to fill his head. And pretty much the rest of the elected duds in KCMO as well.
And now all the misdirection, false promises, and gradiose dreams are running smack into financial realities and some serious adult residents who are surfacing the facts and making them known to the rest of the residents of the city who will be on the hook for this fiasco for decades.
The man behind the curtain is finally being revealed. Not a very pretty sight.

  11. What the fuck is an activist?

    Talk about a meaningless word.

  12. This nonsense has been going on long before Sly the Sneak was elected into office. It was going on while Funky (remember him??) was still in office. Clay and his light rail has gotten the peoples votes time and time again, the city council just keeps burying it for their own agenda. It's not just about the streetcar crap and trying to silence/shut out Clay, the more important question people should be asking is "If the light rail has been passed time and time again (since 2006--8 years ago), we have been paying on it, so where in the Hell has the money gone???"

It should have been built and been YEARS into public use by now, so where has all that money been going if not to the light rail?? Answer THAT one City Council. Bang Bang!!

  13. @6:48 You are mistaken-we have voted on one of Clay's plans 8 times but only 1 actually passed. That one was not put into action so no moneys have been collected nor have we been taxed.
Money has been wasted and spent on study after study, vote after vote.

  14. Yes, tens of millions spent on planning over and over again. But KCMO has shown over and over again that the city really can't pull much of anything off very well. In fact, they couldn't run a one-car garage.
And this isn't turning out any differently.
But by the time it all collapses, the planners, engineers, cheerleaders, consultants, and urban futurists will all be long gone, working on more "latest new ideas", writing new books, hitting the lecture circuits, and counting their money.
And the residents of KCMO will be making bond payments of $10-15 every year for decades.
    All aboard.

  15. @6:48 and @6:56 You are both right. Clay's plan has been voted on, but did not pass every time. However, just because it did not pass each time does not mean that the people did not lose in the end. Money, opportunities, time, etc have all been wasted/lost due to political corruption and personal agendas. Meanwhile, the community has suffered a great deal from the downtown area to the southern Kansas City area.

Hats off to Clay for battling against the council. They have been trying to beat the guy down for years.

  16. I predict the streetcar phase 2 will fail, sly will be re-elected, and there will be an attempt to create a smaller TDD in 2015 around the areas that turned out for them.

I don't even see how this is legal. Jefferson City needs to stop this now.
