SNAP: Two new abuse allegations at KC Catholic schools
Argument:
"Why the continuing delays and secrecy? If they suspended a teacher for alleged abuse, why did they not tell parents and the public? And if they learned of abuse allegations on March 3, why did KC Catholic officials conceal them until March 13?
"Those ten days of secrecy gave a potential criminal plenty of time to destroy evidence, intimidate victims, threaten whistle blowers, discredit witnesses, fabricate alibis, “lawyer up,” and molest more children.
"Finn and his top aides have some tough questions to answer. In a rigid hierarchy like the Catholic church, it's virtually certain that St. Thomas More principal Brian Borgmeyer did not unilaterally decide to suspend a teacher for alleged child sex crimes, bring in a replacement, and hide the allegations for days, weeks or months. It's virtually certain that he consulted with church officials at the diocesan headquarters before he opted to quietly sit on the first set of allegations and the suspension."

ReplyDeleteAm I missing something? Ten days between throwing out the offending priest and making the action public... give it a rest haters from SNAP. What you should be concerned with is what made them go public at all... good intentions (doubtful), lessons learned from past misdeeds (doubtful), good will (more doubtful) or some other factor we and the Blogger King dont yet know about.

ReplyDelete10:37 is right. The parish priest is in charge. It's just like a business with dozens of branch offices. The branch manager handles personnel issues.
ReplyDeleteAgain it's amazing though how Clohessy at SNAP can preach about secrecy and cover-ups when he protected his abusing brother for years.
The principal didn't need to consult with anyone. The Diocesan policy is very clear. Zero tolerance.
ReplyDeleteI'm uncomfortable with publicly destroying someone's reputation before he or she is investigated. Zero tolerance, yes. Immediate suspension, yes. Call in police, yes. But to publicly accuse someone of abuse before there is any investigation is dangerous. Your kid gets a bad grade on a test and decides to get back at the teacher and accuse him of grabbing her ass. Teacher gets busted. Name and photo are all over the media. SNAP is calling for his hanging. Eventually, witnesses and the evidence clear the teacher but he is never able to return to the school with any sort of credibility. Let's have zero tolerance and protect our kids, but let's protect innocent adults as well.

ReplyDeleteThe key word is "allegedly." Just because someone is accused of something does not meant that person actually did it. As for the alleged groping, it's hard for me to understand how this could have happened once in a crowded band room, let alone repeatedly. Sometimes our little angels are really demons in disguise.

ReplyDeleteFirst, the parish pastor -- never named in any of the stories -- is the primary "go-to guy" on this matter. Not the bishop. Second, ever heard of the law? You cannot convict a man before he's even been charged. Third, ever heard of a girl lying for any reason? Yes, that is a possibility. Even 11-year-olds lie. Facts first, SNAP later. Third, a band teacher who hired the alleged molester has been dismissed (or suspended) on a very flimsy allegation that he was near some kids in Independence and "someone" thought he was looking at the kids. Just that allegation alone (no charge even matches it)got him in trouble. Ridiculous. Again, it will take some time to get the facts. Before ruining a man -- or men -- for life, let's make sure a)the girl is telling the truth (I think she may be making it up) and b)the police clarify what if anything the second man was doing wrong. Stop with the dirty names until you find out what the TRUTH is.
