ReplyDeleteThe majority of Americans are lazy users of the English language. Slang words are endemic in our culture partly because we have an incessant desire to shorten the words we use when communicating.
ReplyDeleteUnless you find a comparable word which is shorter than "retarded" don't expect it's usage to end. "Mentally-challenged" is way too long and will not be widely adapted.
