SCHOOL BOARD VICE-CHAIR CRISPIN REA ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR KANSAS CITY COUNCIL

Gomez, Skaggs, and West provide early support for Rea’s unifying, grassroots campaign and aggressive commitment to overcoming division

Kansas City, MO – Today Crispin Rea, Jr., Vice-Chair of the Kansas City Missouri Public School Board of Directors, announced his candidacy for the Kansas City Council, Third District At-Large.

“Kansas City is poised to become a leading center for economic growth and innovation,” said Rea. “But without strong, visionary leadership that’s ready to listen, learn, and, form a long-term plan for our City’s shared success, our challenges stand to derail our many opportunities. That’s the kind of leader I have been on the School Board, and that’s the type of leader I will be on the City Council if I am given the opportunity to serve.”

Born and raised in Kansas City’s Third District, Rea, 28, is the youngest member ever elected to the Kansas City Missouri Public School Board of Directors, where he began serving in 2010. He serves as the Board’s Vice-Chair until his term expires in early 2014.

“Crispin represents one of our City’s best opportunities for job growth and economic development in each council district, not just for minority business owners, but for all business owners,” said Carlos Gomez, President and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City. “I am proud to provide my strong endorsement for Crispin’s candidacy, because our City needs leaders committed to learning from our business and labor communities how it can become the best engine for economic growth possible. That’s what Crispin will do, and that’s why I support him.”

“I’m committed to running a campaign that recognizes that, while our current state of dynamic economic growth is not widely shared across racial, geographic, and socio-economic lines, we must work with our business and labor communities to find better solutions to our growing inequality,” said Rea. “I am proud to have the early support of such well respected, innovative leaders like my good friend Carlos Gomez.”

“The Third District needs strong leadership to overcome our racial and geographic divisions, creating long-term partnerships for shared economic prosperity and a safer city for all of us,” said Rep. Bonnaye Mims, former Hickman Mills School Board President and AFSCME Local 1812 member. “I am inspired by Crispin because of his commitment to blurring the lines of antiquated separation by giving everyone an opportunity to be heard and to be represented.”

“This city still has problems dividing itself north from south, east from west, not focusing on common problems and shared opportunities” said Bill Skaggs, former Northland Kansas City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem. “Having seen first-hand the unifying, experienced leader Crispin has consistently shown himself to be, I am confident that he will lead on day one, helping to bridge our divides and build coalitions around a shared vision.”

“My campaign will transcend the false dichotomies of a city divided, while recognizing that Kansas City can only reach its potential by overcoming its historic racial, geographic, and socio-economic divisions,” said Rea. “That is why I am honored to have the friendship and encouragement of two bridge-builders across race and region, Rep. Bonnaye Mims, a true champion of equality, and Bill Skaggs, a respected Northland leader and statesman.”

"I have had the opportunity to serve as the Third District's PIAC representative, as Vice President of the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, as the Third District’s NTDF

Representative, and am currently a member of Morningstar Baptist Church’s Redevelopment Board,” said Airick West, KCMSD School Board President. “Having worked with Crispin, I am convinced he is what the Third District needs.”

“I look forward to listening to the many concerns and ideas, challenges and best-practices of our neighborhood groups, business owners, faith communities, and civic activists alike,” said Rea. “I am convinced that, as Kansas Citians, we all share core aspirations and values. As an at-large councilperson, I will identify those values and fight tirelessly to see our shared aspirations realized.”

Kansas City’s Third District At-Large is currently represented by Councilwoman Melba Curls, who is barred from seeking reelection by Kansas City’s term limits. Pending Charter Changes, the Third District At-Large primary election will take place in February 2015.

Crispin Rea’s candidacy seeks to move Kansas City forward from an era of division into a time of shared prosperity. His campaign is rooted in the idea that Kansas City cannot reach its full potential until all share in its abundant successes. That’s why his focus is on listening, first and foremost, to the many and diverse voices of people and organizations he seeks to represent. 2. Why should someone who was in a leadership role when kcmosd got unaccredited get a promotion and a raise?

Seems like he should resign, not look for higher office.

  3. Crispin should absolutely, positively win this race!! This is finally a candidate worth voting for!!

Skaggs is a long time friend of Van Loh and supports a new single terminal at KCI.

If Rea is elected, Skaggs will expect his vote in return.

  15. While I support this young man's ambition and involvement in the community, I likely will not support his efforts here as he is choosing to more closely affiliate himself with people like A.L. West.

My understanding was that Mr. Rea was a law student. If this is correct, he needs to concentrate his efforts full-time on his legal studies, and minimize external distractions.

  16. Good news for the 3rd. We have too many issues and need serious people.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I hate to see smart young people who have the potential to become productive members of society take the easy route and go to the dark side. If Mr Rea wants to positively impact the third district, he ought to start a business there and employ people rather than simply moving shells around hoping that there is a pot of gold under one of them.

  18. This young man and others like him, are the future of Kansas City. If the current lot of niggers and followers are kept in the positions of power, KC is definitely destined to be a shithole of shitholes...

  25. This announcement provides us with a good opportunity to good a brief case study, which is applicable to others as well.

If you link to Mr. Rea's website, you will read about his background. This consists of a laudatory synopsis of his accomplishments with emphasis on the fact that he is a lifelong resident of KC's Third District.
    Examples:
We learn that he was inspired to serve by his late mother. That his father has been a union member for 36 years.

Next, the narrative takes a turn toward a "Horatio Alger" boilerplate which is all too common among political candidates. He was "once considered an at-risk youth"!! By the grace of God, and perseverance of his parents, he attended Catholic schools to receive a superior education. Then, it was off to Park University, while working and receiving a scholarship.

While in college, he began working (or was it volunteering?) in the Mayor's office, and we're told that "no other Hispanic men or women were in leadership positions" at this time! Did you catch that dear reader? We're led to believe that as a college student, Mr. Rea was already serving in a leadership role! This is the type of distorted language that provides a clue into Mr. Rea's psychological dysfunction.

Following college graduation, the narrative reports that Mr. Rea was so "concerned about the dysfunctional state of KCPS" that he was inspired to run for the school board. We are encouraged to forget that Mr. Rea was a product of Catholic schools, as his family had abandoned the "failing school district" years earlier. While "he was elected by a wide margin" and "crafted one of the nation's strongest conflict of interest policies" as well "introduced a policy that extended protections to LGBTQIA students", no mention is made of the fact that the KCPS is an unaccredited failure! So, once again, we see a crafted narrative divorced from reality.

Are you hanging in there, dear reader? Have you put on your hip boots yet?

An entire paragraph is devoted to using the homicide of sixteen-year-old Juan Garcia, as a rhetorical device to elicit sympathetic support for Mr. Rea. I personally find this inclusion to be quite offensive!

I sense you're growing fatigued, dear reader, and discerning the true nature of this political candidate, so I'll begin to wrap things up.

On to UMKC law school, and further cementing his political relationships by serving as Jackson County Democratic Committeeman.

    Our criticism is the following:
    1) While Mr. Rea has certainly excelled at educational achievement, he has repeatedly sought to leverage this primarily for his own personal political advantage while singing the refrain of "noble public service." We note that he is not pursuing a career as teacher, legal public defender, etc.
    2) Whether conscious of it or not, we believe that Mr. Rea is chasing an unhealthy idealized psychological image of himself, in an attempt to please the mother which he tragically lost too early in life.
    3) Concerning the cited website, we find fault with Mr. Rea for the manner in which it was written and the misuse of emphasis and language. We have real fears that Mr. Rea has outed himself as a political sycophant and narcissist, who if successful, will repeat the pattern of an ego-driven, self-centered political operative who continues until they self-destruct.

  32. Anon 12:41 provides nothing to respond to. He has only shown envy - he is either Crispin's age and cannot figure out what he wants to do with himself or twice Rea's age with nothing to show for it. His post bored me after several paragraphs as well and I don't have time to go back and read the rest of it. Kudos to Rea though, he has a new troll too scared to put his name next to his words!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha yeah, get off those nuts lol. If you read this Crispin, that dude with that long ass post devoted a damn book to you LOL. Get off Crispin's sack!

  34. That's because he's a sell out who will do anything to get to the next higher office. I'd vote for Tony before I'd vote for this guy. Can we PLEASE find people to run for office who will actually serve the people who elect them?! Why is that too much to ask?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Talk to his KCPS constituents- dude would never return a phone call or email, EVER. And sorry, but he used KCPS to launch his political career?! Bad for the kids, bad for Kansas city. That should be his opponent's anti slogan. And it will be true.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hope he brings all of his skills that he used on the KCPS board, if you vote for this new professional politician then KC deserves every bit of what they get and you all are nothing more than ignorant fucking rubes, he will use his authority to back every friend that gave him a launching pad to get to where he will be after the election and I promise you this, like wagner, like circo he will be riding that position until he moves up to congress and then like cleaver you couldnt get him out of office if he molested children, he's the only one I know that tells the IRS and the citizens to go fuck themselves and refuses to do what every other citizen has to do BY LAW and the best they can do is garnish his paycheck?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh yes just what we need is another huge failure from the school board. You idiots vote this fool in and I will be done with you all.

You will never matter to anyone and you will always have zero influence. Now go talk about "ck" and the other dumb shit you come up with.

    1. Uh no, I'm a dad with three children in the school district ages 8, 13 and 17 and I'm a hater! This guy was the most unresponsive school board member. The only time he seemed to show up was if the press was there. He'd get his 5 minutes of camera time, quick interview and head for the door before anyone that mattered could ask him a question. I bet the majority of those who support him have never had children in the district. Find me someone outside of the KCPS cheer leading squad that accompanies him and West everywhere that supports this guy. I'm outraged, after his lack of leadership he has the balls to run for city council. But he'll win cause he plays the game... Thats the problem with this city's politics you either play the game or you don't get elected and this guy's game is on point. So get ready to get screwed just like the decent kids of KCPS have been since he and West took office.

  42. Now what are his actual accomplishments? Has he ever managed a business, made payroll, directly supervised anyone? What has he done besides run for office? Which mayor did he intern for? What a fricking joke!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dia'Rea has failed at the School Board...and now he wants to be promoted...nah. He needs to go away. While Curls is a bottom feeder, this guy is even less qualified. At some point KC has to stop PROMOTING "failures".

Dia'Rea you have a record and it is "FAIL".

  47. I find it really disturbing that people are ridiculing the posters that have had personal experience with this man as a parent in the district. If these are the kind of people who support him, what does that say about him? I for one would listen to a (reasonable) district parent on this guy's ability to govern long before I listen to the political machine that is KC politics. His supporters aren't doing him any favors on here. Haters? What is this election for, prom king? This is KC politics. And any grown person who calls another grown person a "hater" while debating the merits of a candidate needs to mature a little before entering the discussion.

  48. Prove your worth Mr. Rea. Get a real job in the private sector for 5 years then come back and run and then I'll give you a second look. But this becoming a professional politician before you even hold a real job, buy a house, getting some real life experience tells me you aren't who I want running my city. At least Ms. Circo ran her own business even if it was a nail salon. I hold a small business person in much higher regard than some kid fresh out of law school. I'll likely be voting for your opponent sir.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Rea is a perfect example of the KCMO "political class" at work. Get elected to something; do as little as possible so that you don't make enemies or mistakes; schmooze the insiders and "power elite"; get lots of endorsements from people who have advanced themselves in the system just like you're trying to do; be sure to have no ideas, policy recommendations, or issues that you can actually try to do something about; agree to become a front man for one of the same old crowd and promise to keep the contracts, grants, and other goodies coming; run some silly campaign with yard signs, appearances, and receptions.
Result: and empty glass. Just like most of the folks at city hall are right now.
Same old wine in a bright shiny new bottle.
Isn't someone like Jermaine Reed a recent enough example?

Where political beefs can be aired w/o the fear of consequences. Cranks. Gadflys. Malcontents. I have no dog in this race but what I can say is very few of the people targeted by commenters bother to read the comments. You all are talking to no one lol.

  54. 9:22 But you read them! Natch. And they all read them or have someone read it for them. Every last one of em'.

8:57 Running local government is much more like running a business than it is practicing law. When did everyone decide being a lawyer all of a sudden made you qualified for political office. Oh and back to 9:22 "elected officials" elected... The people who elected these fools, white, black, red, yellow, purple, north or the river south of the river DON'T WANT A NEW AIRPORT! The people have spoken on that issue over and over and over. But you think you know better, make fun of the rest of us and do what you want. That's what's wrong with the politicians in this city.
