TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOOD VICTORY: CITY PLAN COMMISSION UNANIMOUSLY VOTES AGAINST CATHOLIC DORMS!!!

The MUST GULLY members of our blog community have been following a neighborhood Catholic construction controversy for more than a year and now we have the FIRST real news on the topic.

Check it . . .

MIDTOWN KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORS REJOICE OVER THE REJECTION OF CATHOLIC DORMS!!!

The most AWESOME TKC TIPSTER tells us:

"The City Plan Commission ruled unanimously against Bishop Finn's plans to put a Catholic dormitory at the site of the St. Francis Xavier school. This was a great victory for neighbors against a man(actually a group of men, all white, well-off) who think they are entitled to anything they want. The diocese has already let the school fall into disrepair, all while denying use by parishioners of St. Francis parish. The way the bishop treats the parish is shameful--he's trying to destroy a liberal parish."

Thankfully, right now this story is not developing but there's more to come . . .

  1. While this particular idea was dumb from the get-go (particularly since both UMKC and Rockhurst remained "neutral" on it), your tipster is mistaken, Tony.

The responsibility for keeping parish buildings in good repair belongs to the parish, not the diocese.

It must also be noted that it was the decision of the pastor at the time, not the diocese, to shut down the school, and he did it suddenly, just a few days before the fall school term was to open, long before Bishop Finn came here, and without consulting the people of his own parish, including his school board.

  2. I fail to see why the race of the priests and bishops seem to matter here. That would be something a racist would post here, and you aren't a racist IS YA?@!

  3. This parish was run by the JESUITS. They destroyed this parish over a period of about three decades. We all watched it happen. Don't blame this on the diocese.

  4. The parish is still run by Jesuits. The provincial appoints the pastor, and the bishop merely rubber-stamps it.

Remember also that soon after the pastor shut down his own school, he signed a sweetheart deal to lease the building to a charter school, requiring the parish to spend big bucks to put the building back in shape, including A/C.

That charter school lasted only a few years, leaving the parish holding a new debt and a white elephant.

Again, the dorm idea was dumb, both in conception and execution. But let's not blame "the diocese" and "a group of men, all white, well-off" for all the problems this parish has.

  9. If Finn proposed opening an elementary school on the site, a good number of the good people of the parish would insist on tearing the school down and building a dormitory for Rockhurst students.

Nobody destroyed St Francis parish. Things change.

  11. You know, not that this was a good idea, but NIMBYs always reach for "traffic" first.

The issue here wasn't traffic. Did they complain about traffic when this was an elementary school? Without bus service and with parents dropping off and picking up kids before and after school, and again for all sorts of evening and weekend activities?

And do they complain about all the traffic UMKC and Rockhurst already generates?

I read that and recalled all the additional "traffic" that would be generated along Wornall Road by the Walmart grocery store. Right.

I wish NIMBYs would get some new schtick. Traffic was never the big issue here. The big issue was parking, particularly handicapped accessible spaces required by state and federal law.

When the developer couldn't possibly meet parking requirements for a 250-unit dormitory, he scaled it down to 100 units. And even then, he couldn't do it.

  14. Who would want their kid living in a dorm at 53rd and Troost?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well, lots of kids live in dorms on both campuses. And lots live in rental properties withing a short walk of 53rd & Troost.

This proposed dorm was supposed to appeal to uber-Catholics, will all sorts of uber-Catholic stuff built in, and a church right next door.

While it could not discriminate based on religion, it was unlikely that those of other strongly held religious faiths -- or no faith at all -- would be lured.

Which made the place a real longshot for viability, particularly across the street from a Catholic campus with its own dorms and programs.

A priest and a rabi are walking near 12th and Broadway. A little 6year old boy walks by. The priest looks to the rabi and says "man, I'd like to fuck that!" The rabi says "outa what?"

  19. Yes, they can discriminate by religion if they own the building and only rent to Catholics.
