Tonight, college students throughout the region are standing up against recent anti-gay legislation in Kansas under consideration.
Student Body Presidents from The University of Kansas, K-State and UMKC have signed on to a letter opposing HB 2453:
DEAR MEMBERS OF THE KANSAS LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR BROWNBACK . . .
Here's the most important part . . .
"As the elected leaders of the students at our institutions we have been given the duty of representing all of our constituents - including those of the LGBT community. We must make sure that we are doing everything we can to make our universities better on issues that are of importance and that affect our students.
House Bill 2453 is detrimental to the progress of Kansas as a state. Denying the civil rights of a community in our great state risks the loss of some of the best and brightest citizens to other states that recognize that equality and freedom should apply to all people. The denial of basic human rights to some of our citizens based solely upon whom they love is not only a step backward in time, but a moral travesty. Furthermore, Kansas risks economic hardship as forward thinking employers will chose to either not locate to Kansas or to relocate to other states that welcome all of their employees.
This bill will allow widespread discrimination against gays and lesbians - the functional equivalent of some of the darkest days in our nation's history, when blacks or inter-racial couples were denied equal treatment and protection under the law . . .

"An act concerning religious freedoms with respect to marriage." Yes folks, if you'd only read it, perhaps you'd understand that it's not about discriminating against people, but rather protecting one's "sincerely held religious beliefs."
Don't you have faith in the great people of Kansas to treat their fellow brethren in a humane manner?
Would you condone a homosexual couple appearing at a Catholic, fundamentalist Christian, Mennonite, or other church, and demanding to be wed in a church ceremony when it violates the faith's doctrine?
A man requests to have transgender surgery to transition to a female, at a church-affiliated hospital which doesn't offer it on religious grounds. Should they be forced to accommodate the man's request?
A group of 3 men and 2 women who practice S&M as a religion, were united in a plural marriage in San Francisco, they move to Kansas and seek recognition of their marriage, along with state benefits, etc. They favor sexually suggestive black leather outfits, carry whips, handcuffs and chains. When they show up at your Sunday bible study class, do you have the right to refuse them?
