Check this bit of Kansas City biz inspiration from one of our favorite, young power brokers:
Missouri.com Interview With Jason Grill: “Kansas City is a sleeping giant on a national and international level when it comes to entrepreneurship.”
Here's a bit more celebration of our cowtown biz culture . . .
"Kansas City is an amazing city and has a rich entrepreneurial history. We have the best foundation for entrepreneurship and education in the world with the Kauffman Foundation being here. We have an abundance of resources, Google fiber, corporate innovation and some of the best accelerators in the US. However, the real reason for Kansas City’s surge the last few years has been the community. The entrepreneurial community in KC is ultra supportive of each other in all facets. People and businesses work together and are willing to introduce you to just about anyone to help your startup or entrepreneurial endeavor succeed. In a competitive world, KC entrepreneurs are about bringing the entire ecosystem up, rather than just their own business."
This is a pretty strong pitch from a dude who is quite impressive in a suit.
In fact, Mr. Grill is getting some pretty nice reviews for his recent Sock 101 special event.
While, our experience with local biz folk has been mixed and we find that most people (in general) would gladly slit the throat of the guy one seat over on the bus if they thought they could get away with it . . . This biz hype is nice if only because it reflects the ideal for Kansas City and it's worth sharing if anybody wanted a yearbook answer about the local economy to share in polite company.
These guys mistake crony capitalism for entrepreneurialism. Bribing city politicians for favors is not entrepreneurialism. Regulating your competitors out of business is not entrepreneurialism.

ReplyDeleteThose that see the Kansas City Metropolitan Area as any sort of entrepreneurial mecca really need to get out of the house more often. Jason is correct in his assessment of the Kaufmann center and I'll say that the several other unmentioned local organizations dedicated to entrepreneurship are wonderful. However the single largest sector of entrepreneurial activity in the world is the Internet and when you compare our metro area with the San Jose metro area, Chicago, or New York, the sheer numbers of startups and the pools of engineering talent are just not at all correlated for the size of each area. This is not to shoot down the achievements of our established software and hardware giants or the up-and-comers. But we are 28% the size of the San Jose metro and our startup numbers are not even 10% what theirs are. Kansas City and the surrounding metro area have a lot to offer a tech startup but if speed of growth (based on available talent) is a concern, ours is not the region in which want to start an internet company.
ReplyDeleteBlah, blah, blah. He is a sock puppet.
ReplyDeleteYes, KCMO is on the move.
ReplyDeleteWe just built a grocery store at 39th and Prospect!
Just another KC "power player" endlessly on the make.
Amateur night on the plains.

Say, I wonder what BIG THINGS are happening down at Startup Village these days!!??
Grill is nothing more than a predator of women and a complete narcissist. Ask anyone who sees (ie gropped by) him at the bars any night of the week. Total sociopathic behavior.

Bravo! Well said, Mr. Grill. KC is popping with exciting energy surrounding the startup & entrepreneur scene.
ReplyDeleteTo all the naysayers, I say take heed. Silicon Valley didn't happen over night, nor did Boulder, New York, Boston, Chicago or any other burgeoning startup city. KC has a great start. Check back in 5 years and you'll be very surprised (and pleased) at what you see.
Unfortunately in five years KCMO will more resemble Detroit than silicon valley. It may take ten years but bankruptcy is definitely a possibility.
ReplyDeleteSo true, 11:20 - unless voters get off their asses and vote these idiots who are in office now OUT, who are abusing the public's money, KC will be Detroit.
ReplyDeleteHe's 100% right, if you're a white man.
ReplyDeleteHe's 100% right, if you're a white man.
ReplyDelete"predator of women and a complete narcissist", hmmmmmm, insert Alonzo, Jermaine, Jason, Byron...hell they are changeable. Just different colors.
ReplyDeleteKC the next Silicon Valley...what fucking drug are you on ? I want some of that.
ReplyDeleteReality is KC will be the next Detroit in 5 years. Plaza boarded up. Snipers above P&L. Abandoned cars at Zona Rosa. Nope, the only Silicon in KC will be in Pootie Tangs whores riding to Waldo in the Toy Train.
Grill is gushing like a broken water main.
ReplyDeleteJason Grill, the Pee Wee Herman of KC.
ReplyDelete1:09, silicon is what's in chips. Silicone is what's in improved tits. They's different. That's why tits are measured in inches instead of gigabytes. Just so ya know ...
ReplyDelete4:03 thanks for the insight...now go back to jacking your little dick off watching cartoons.
ReplyDelete4:03 are you related to that moron Byron ?
ReplyDeleteTony, just marry the guy. We all know you want to. He's a used car salesman with a thesaurus - "rich" - ha! He's rich alright coming from that lawyer family.
ReplyDeleteI'm so pumped!!!
