Show-Me Blog shares this tidbit that FACT CHECKS the claims of Kansas City streetcar cheerleaders and reveals their twisted logic: "(KC Star Columnist Yael) Abouhalkah and other streetcar boosters are simply claiming credit for any development that occurs after plans to build a streetcar. This is the most basic of logical fallacies: post hoc ergo propter hoc. But this is not uncommon."

Streetcar supporters are mean!
ReplyDeleteFirst the streetcars were all about public transportation. Then they weren't.
ReplyDeleteThen they were all about eco devo. Now, not so much.
Next they were all about "tying the city's neighborhoods together", although it's hard to see how buses and streets don't do that already.
At the end of the day, the streetcars will be able dreams and mostly about debt.
That the taxpayers will be paying for decades.

The streetcar is such a joke. Again, you have a few wannabe urbanites that think the toy train is really going to put CK on the map! They can get on it and ride a block and get a stiffy by pretending it’s like the subway in NYC or the El in Chicago, when it’s more like the tram at Disneyworld. CK is car city. If it wasn’t, more people would be riding the Metro or Jo buses. If CK had all its ducks in a row and still had a lot of surplus dough to throw at experimental projects, then great. But since that is hardly the case, pour the money into more important improvements like water lines, sewers, street repairs and blight clean up.
ReplyDeleteWhats most important is that Developers overbuild a variety of market rate units. Slap a $10,000,500.00 or higher fictitious value on it, so they can pay $145 a year in property taxes with CK's special "tax incentives".

That why cities don't build airports. That why suburbs don't develop along highways. That's why there arn't towns along old wagon trails. Thats why cities don't build streets or bridges, that why there's no development at subway stops, or along the transit corridors of cities.

The proposed streetcar has brought no decent jobs downtown. The City handing out subsidies for market rate apartments will insure that KCMO will become a bedroom community for the jobs in JoCo.

WHEREAS, the Newbern Project is a multi-family housing development within the Armour Gillham PIEA Planning Area, as such area is proposed to be expanded by PIEA Resolution No. 1567; and
WHEREAS, completion of the Newbern Project will significantly contribute to blight remediation in the Armour Gillham PIEA Planning Area; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to identify appropriate additional funding mechanisms to support completion of the Newbern Project; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That the City Manager is hereby authorized to execute a funding agreement with the Planned Industrial Expansion Authority of Kansas City, Missouri for blight remediation in the Armour Gillham PIEA Planning Area in the amount of $2,500,000.00 from funds to be appropriated from the Industrial Development Authority of the City of Kansas City, Missouri - Uptown Theater and Midtown Redevelopment Projects Midtown Business Interruption Fund.

ReplyDeleteHow many businesses have come and/or gone in City Center Square, Grand Street, and the Town Pavilion over the past decade?
ReplyDeleteEven if a business claims that the streetcar played a part in their decision to open, let's not pretend that it's really breaking news that something is developing within The Loop.
You can add residential and small business storefronts downtown all you want. Until the streetcar brings back over $600M worth of business the size of AMC or TransAmerica to downtown, they're not even CLOSE to justifying their costs.
