Journey with with TKC just a few years back in Kansas City politics and remember a so-called "renaissance" of female elected officials on the City Council.
The aftermath of this epoch of "Girl Power" on the 29th floor: Former Mayor Funkhouser was DESTROYED by his own incompetence and because his wife was kinda nasty, didn't seem to like wearing shoes to the office and because the ladies on the Council united against her.
And now . . .
BEHIND THE SCENES KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS TELL US THAT KEEPING FEMININE CONTROL OF THE 4TH DISTRICT IS NOW AN ELECTION TALKING POINT!!!
Allegedly, this bit of girl power is being talked up by Council Lady Jan Marcason herself . . . For those close enough to her to move beyond polite potato salad recipe trading.
Here's the word . . .
"Talk to Jan. She has nothing but good things to say about Jolie and she won't just hint about "supporting women in leadership" which is just her public code language calling on all women to vote for Jolie."
Now, we must stipulate that upcoming 4th district Council Challenger MO State Sen. Jolie Justus has a great many legislative accomplishments on her own merits and doesn't need to stoop to mere identity politics. Sadly, we can't really think of anything she has accomplished.
Nevertheless . . . The real news here is that a divisive debate is already starting in a City Council race that's just a bit more than a year away but already getting nasty.

ReplyDeleteIt really should be clear by now that actually accomplishing anything by any of these folks is not the reason they run for office.
ReplyDeleteA job on the public payroll is the goal and you see the same people go from one to the next, with occasional stops at nonprofits or in some paying appointment at some level of government.
And they're doing just fine with our tax money, thanks very much.

ReplyDeleteI liked Funkhouser. I know I'm not the only one. One thing about him... he was fair and mostly trustworthy; contrary to what we have now.
ReplyDeletePerhaps CK's City Kouncil will put up another research tax up for vote this year. So we can say, slide a jazz pianist’s head into an MRI machine — and can crack the code of creativity and unleash its moneymaking power. And by doing so, City Kansas will jump light years ahead of all the competition, making us the capital of the universe.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what kind of neighborhood these people will choose to live in when they leave office. Do you think they’ll rent a high-rise apartment? Or maybe a mid-rise apartment or hipster loft in some downtown-wannabe new urban development along the toy train route? I have my doubts.

ReplyDeleteFirst off, government does NOT exist for your benefit. Government exists through it's power to compel you to pay taxes.
Government by it's nature, will attempt to grow exponentially, like a cancer metastasizing in your body. Ask yourself, "when was the last time your tax rate was decreased?" Not only is it constantly being raised, but new taxes are continually being implemented.
He/she who controls the branches of government are nearly always complicit in this never-ending upward spiral of tax oppression against you. It doesn't matter what gender or race the political officeholder happens to be, as women of color will raise your taxes as surely as a white man.
Your goal, as an individual, should be to minimize your taxes (compulsory extortion) while maximizing your municipal and state services. So, who is the most efficient and gives the best deal in this Faustian bargain between taxpayer and municipality/state? Do you think KCMO is the best? If you believe that most people make decisions based upon their own self-interest, then population statistics would indicate that KCMO continues to fail in comparison to the alternatives.
I don't want someone elected on whether they have a penis or vagina, the color of their skin, their economic status. I want people elected who can get the job done and who know what the real job is - period. I know - I'm a dreamer and it isn't ever going to happen. I have as much problem with people getting elected because they are female or black etc as I do with them not getting elected because they are female, black etc.

If the BEST qualified candidate turns out to be a women, I'll vote for that candidate. I'm not going to vote for a person just to raise the estrogen level in City Hall.
