HERE'S 1ST PERSON TESTIMONY REGARDING A COLD WEATHER HICKMAN MILLS FIASCO!!!
The deets are chilling . . .
"Ingels Elementary with an enrollment of over 450 students conducted classes on January 8th although there was a lack of running water. They required the kids and teachers to use port a potties.
In the frigid weather conditions they had to put on coats and go outside to use the facilities. They had to use hand sanitizer to wash their hands and relied on Igloo coolers for drinking waters. They apparently used bottled water to prepare meals.
Asking teachers to teach and students to attend school under these conditions is unconscionable. School district officials responsible should be held accountable. I'm sure they would not want their children to use outhouses. Additionally, hand sanitizer is not an adequate substitute for soap and water the discharge of bodily waste. The community should be outraged.
It is my understanding that district officials were aware of the problem since last Friday but allowed the school to open without adequate water services anyway. This matter should be reported to DESE and DFS for investigation. Whomever made the decision to open the school should be disciplined.
The mainstream media is not aware or is ignoring the situation."

ReplyDeleteDESE pays students for each day they are in class. When you cancel school for a day, then you have to add a day to the end of year. Parents always start pulling their kids out of school towards summer vacation.
ReplyDeleteSo adding a day to the end of year means less revenue from DESE and more expenses because you have to pay for unplanned buses, extra pay for staff, etc.
That all adds up to lost money.
So you call off school and the school looses money. Then you have to cut something and parents complain about the cut. You keep school open to save money and parents complain about that too.
Typical rock and hard place. I think Hickman Mills made the wrong decision and should have called off school and just took the loss.
But people saying everyone needs to call the Department of Family Services? Good grief people, lets grow up and act like adults. Scream at the school board a bit because they deserve it, but keep things in perspective. It is way over the top to try to bring DESE and DFS into this.

ReplyDelete8:44 has it. Districts hate to cancel due to money and schedule issues. The district as a whole had just lost two days (Mon & Tues) I suspect didn't want to lose more. But this was the wrong call. Take your lumps on this one. The school staff can take turns yelling at the water dept to get off their rears and fix the main.
