We caught this post from the Show-Me blog on the rebound and we appreciate their basketball terminology and reference to this town's losing pro-sports history.

"Perhaps to make up for stealing the Kings, Sacramento has decided to show Kansas City the pitfalls of expensive airport terminals. Sacramento opened a new $1 billion terminal in 2011. Like Kansas City, Sacramento wanted to attract more airlines and passengers with a state-of-the-art facility. Like the Kansas City experience, the terminal:
…drew rave reviews from local business leaders and politicians…the project was criticized by airline executives, including those at Southwest, as too big and too expensive for their needs.
Despite the criticisms, the Sacramento County Airport System decided to build anyway. This gave the airport a high debt load and made it one of the most expensive medium-sized airports in the nation, a dubious honor that will belong to Kansas City if its new terminal plan takes flight."
Meanwhile . . . Kansas City Mayor Sly says that any effort to question this process or make sure it stands to a public vote is wasted.

ReplyDeleteFor the last decade, the city has been caught up in a pork fest — all of it perfectly legal — the likes of which are unequaled in any American city. A small group of developers and attorneys with City Hall connections glommed on to a program for poor neighborhoods and used it to build luxury hotels and fancy shopping centers in the richest parts of town, draining $90 million per year from the city’s budget and racking up $5 billion in debt. Cash poor, the city’s bridges, sidewalks and sewers were literally crumbling, and Kansas Citians were at wits’ end.

We had a Mayor who if he thought something was stupid, would openly and publicly call it “stupid.” Or “insane.” Or “corrupt.” Or “evil.”

ReplyDeleteThe number of flights and the size of the airplanes that airlines offer is based on the number of passengers that they can consistently attract for their scheduled flights. The notion that a new terminal building has any impact of those numbers or decisions is ludicrous. And as for international flights, the airlines will fill small airplanes in KC and fly them to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, or San Francisco and then fill up large airplanes to fly to overseas destinations.
ReplyDeleteIf these folks want to build a new terminal because they're bored with their jobs or some other reason, that's fine, but the rationales they've offered so far treat the public like a bunch of idiotic rubes.
Living in Kansas City, and it's recent transformation into the cattle brand 'CK' is like being in a nightmare that keep getting worse as it progresses, and you can't get out it. Ugh.
