MUST READ KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR FACT CHECK!!!

Check out this bit of reality that puts Kansas City cheerleading in perspective . . . Streetcars Will Waste Your Money And Your Time . . . Here are some HARD FACTS FOR THE KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR . . . "We know from previous studies that rail transit does not remove cars from the road. And we know that it is not the rail lines themselves that drive economic development but rather the additional tax incentives that governments hand out along rail lines. We know that the people of Kansas City have voted down streetcars every time a legitimate election has been held. And judging by the effort to raise private funds yielding only three-ten-thousandths of 1 percent of their goal, Kansas Citians still don’t support it."

  1. I live downtown. When I ask people to visit that have never been here before, the first question they ask is what about parking. If KCMO was interested in revitalising downtown, they would take the money they want to waste on a streetcar money and build parking garages that would be free, get rid of the thousands of parking meters that are not used, and eliminate hundreds of unnecessary no parking signs. Works on the Plaza, JoCo, and the burbs.

  3. Two points:

First, we did have a legitimate election and voted for light rail.
Secondly, when referring to Show-Me Institute opinions, it might be nice if you advised your readers that the president of the Institute, Rex Sinquefield, has consistently supported right-wing causes which serve to enrich the already rich and to punish the working man, i.e. no state taxes, no public schools, no public transit. Nothing for you; everything for me.

  4. Hey 8:21, thanks for stopping by and spreading around your ignorance!

We DID have an election to several years back to establish a light rail system. As you will remember (or maybe you won't but you should) That vote stipulated a rather tight set of constraints devised by Crazy Clay Chastain.

However, instead of initiating the streatcar system movement on the back of Chastain's passed voter initiative, our city council and mayor chose a new initiative that would be voted on only by residents in very small districts known as TDDs. This, even though it is not economically possible to extract enough cash from the rather small geographic regions to build and run the system.

If you and your friends want to get all dolled up for a fun-filled day of riding the train back and forth from one entertainment district to another, that's great. However, I will ultimately have to pay for your foolish pleasure and doing so doesn't appeal to me.

Also, why the strawman with regard to Sinquefield being for right-wing causes? Is being against transportation systems that take away from basic bus service for the benefitsof hipsters that want to be able to say that their town has a streetcar a right-wing opinion?

  5. 8:21 Your argument, if it can be called that, about the Show-Me Institute is absurd. The fact that you don't like Sinquefield and don't agree with him on other issues does not relieve you from meeting the article's points head-on, instead of dodging them with an offhand ad hominem.
