Let's start the morning with just a bit of local celebration for Kansas City money losing achievement.
Check it . . .
TAKE A LOOK @ COUNCIL LADY JAN MARCASON TALKING UP THE MONEY LOSING DOWNTOWN RENAISSANCE!!!
Money line:
"Unless you liked haunted houses or adult book stores, you didn't really have a reason to go downtown . . ."
Smart Growth America: Councilmember Jan Marcason on transforming Kansas City, MO's downtown
Now, what's missing from this discussion is that Kansas City is losing $14 MILLION a year on the flagship Downtown P&L District development . . . And now the last hope is that a double down on condos, a toy train and maybe a convention hotel will make up the difference.
Developing . . .
P&L is only one part of downtown. The flaw with it is that there is no draw for families to come during the day on the weekends. You seriously can't tell me that with the re-purposing of closed buildings a grocery store etc did nothing for downtown? Come on. I am sure KCMO wastes more than 14 Million somewhere else too? maybe if it went to burrito stands it would be ok, but since it goes to a place where you can't get laid it is a problem?
ReplyDeleteShould they bring back the wig store and Danny edwards? really the only businesses there before construction!
Bring back Danny Edwards - YES!
ReplyDeleteThat place was AWESOME. Much more useful than another Kayne concert.
Kay Barnes is responsible for this, not Jan Marcason or anyone on the current council. To say "we did this" is untrue. Give Barnes the credit. The council should name a street after Barnes, not just some little spot in the power/light area.
ReplyDeleteEven the adult bookstores are leaving!
ReplyDeleteThe RUCKUS folks, to a man/woman were all jacking themselves off last night about the Toy Train and the economic development it would bring.
ReplyDeleteThey also were thrilled about the new KCI.
In addition, the next two legs of the train will go south on main and east several miles.
Atlanta has MARTA, we will have a reasonable facsimile, like it or not, here it comes.
The increase in taxes was discussed as a really good investment for citizens who live along the route and have business' along the route.
Cause you know, when taxes go up, people flock like starving animals to the bank to get money and give it to the City.
Cause, you know, it seems like almost the very next day things get so much better and the money just starts falling out of trees into middle class wallets.
Read this. Indy is a lot like KC.

ReplyDeleteThere are no adult book stores downtown? And there never were. You sir are dumb.
Something that loses FOURTEEN MILLION BUCKS a year is a big deal!! Hey, that's a lot of green, no matter who or where you are..
ReplyDeleteJan has been to Portland too many times.
ReplyDeleteOh yes there was places to buy adult books down town even strippers to
ReplyDeleteNope it was in midtown. Ray's. Please learn how to use google and or a map. Downtown ends in the 20's rays was in the 30's. Also there still are 2 strip clubs in downtown.
ReplyDeleteCome on Jan now teach and instruct us how to release our inner Mile's Davis's next. So we can really make downtown special!
ReplyDeleteThanks Baby!
She's been soaking in a bubble bath after work reading to much Richard Florida bullshit.
ReplyDeleteIs this the same Jan Marcason that was surprised that Jimmy Johns was building a drive through in downtown 4 days after the rest of the world knew? And now she's taking credit for downtown? It's a good thing her office is downtown or otherwise she'd probably never go there.
ReplyDeleteI gave up hope when the new Logo came out.
ReplyDeleteIf I can just find some sucker, greater fool to buy our place it's out of JackSin county for us.
Downtown was FAR more interesting even in the 70's, than now.
ReplyDeleteDowntown in the 60's was a hoot. 8:59 you can use Google all you want but it won't make you smarter in fact today it made you dumber. Don't try and teach us who was there what was and what wasn't downtown. Now go back downstairs and ask mommy for a diaper change and a fudgsicle.
ReplyDeleteThe streetcar will save City of Kansas just you watch
ReplyDeleteRidership isn't the goal of the streetcar. And those who voted for it aren't really planning on using it.
ReplyDeleteSo whats the point of the god damn focking thing?
Downtown renaissance is easy to explain. There is none.
ReplyDelete947 I will climb back up to my loft. The 20's and 39's I was talking were street numbers. Still never a sex shop downtown. I love internet tough guys. When I go back to my loft would you call your wife and mom and tell to leave.
ReplyDeleteRemember when they tore down The Ship and built a park?
ReplyDeleteSure do elBryan damn those was the days downtown. These kids now days have no clue.
ReplyDelete5:58, if we give Barnes the "credit" for downtown, meaning we can thank her and her boyfriend Herb Kohn for that money-sucking P&L pit that sucks $14 mil out of our general fund, we should name a sewer line after her.
ReplyDeleteYikerzzzs...The Ship!. I hadn't thought of that old joint for years. What a blast it was.
ReplyDeleteHow things have changed in this town.
And the White Front, Allen's and all of the joints along Broadway and the 12th St. Strip.
Power and Light will never compare with these great old joints enjoyed by diverse crowds of real people.
The Quaff did what they had to compete, but they have lost the real 'downtown' character of not too long ago. Still a great place and hope they are doing well.
I miss the old downtown.
