Fear The New Kansas City Tax District!!!

Northeast News
provides an EPIC look at local taxing issue on the upcoming April Ballot.

Here's the money quote:

"The ballot initiative would establish a taxing district that makes up most of Kansas City’s urban core, running from the Missouri River to 85th Street, State Line Road to I-435. Helluva district, don’t ya think?

The new sales tax within the Transportation Development District would be 1 percent; plus, properties closest to the streetcar line would face special property assessments. That means if you own a $200,000 house, you get the distinct “honor” of shellin’ out another couple of hundred a year, just to help fund more trips to the Spanish Riviera for the city suits so they can “study” why Spanish ball bearings are better than ball bearings made in America. Way to support that local economy there, Mr. City Manager."

Read the whole thing and then remember that Kansas City muni-bonds are soon to be downgraded.

  1. The family dollar flyer is right. This tax is bullshit. Vote it down, kill the streetcar.

  2. Just the Main Street starter line needs this money and if these tax increase issues win, the promises of the new streetcar expansion will go on for years, all the while with the excuse that the Feds haven't ponied up the difference.
Just what the urban core needs to promote businesses and residents: new and higher taxes for something they don't need or want.
    All aboard!

  3. Why don't they just double the earnings tax so all those JoCo commuters can help pay our bills?

  4. @12:01 Best idea I've heard so far. Why aren't they implementing an earnings tax?

  7. I sense an upcoming repeat of the OVERWHELMING tax defeat that was known as Translational Medical Research (aka, How To Get The Public To Fund Million-Dollar Compensation Packages For Children's Mercy Administrators).

VOTE NO ON THE TOY TRAIN!

  8. Detroit has an earnings tax that's twice KCMO. How's that working out for them.

  9. 3:25 has it. Sales taxes go up another 1% and I’ll be driving across the state line into KS (or be even more likely to make purchases online).
