Yesterday memorial services began for the Kansas City Firefighter who was involved in an altercation with an off-duty Kansas City police officer and was killed by gunfire during the incident.
The wake was yesterday and the funeral is scheduled for today. Strangely, it seems as if orchestrated media silence has taken this event off the Kansas City radar.

YESTERDAY MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR THE FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN A DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY ALTERCATION DREW MORE THAN 500 MOURNERS ACCOMPANIED BY MULTIPLE FIRE TRUCKS AND ALL OF THE TOP BRASS OF THE DEPARTMENT!!!
THIS WAS NOTHING LESS THAN AN EPIC KANSAS CITY FIREFIGHTER TRIBUTE THAT HAPPENED WITHOUT MUCH OF A MEDIA MENTION!!!
On FD member spoke with TKC last night . . . "My ############ was with the dept. during the explosion that killed the 6 firefighters. I was younger and went with him to the memorial at Arrowhead. This had the exactly the same feeling. All of the firefighters in attendance were feeling the same thing and it's a shame that nobody is allowed to talk about it."
Sadly . . .
These are tough old school Kansas City Insiders who have decided to reveal the details of the memorial to us and even they were shaken up by the tragedy of it all.
One Kansas City Insider said: "It was one of the saddest things I have seen in my life. The show of support was very nice but there is no getting around the fact that the family has been devastated by the tragedy. I think everyone at the event today felt what a shock this was to his family, loved ones and friends."
Obviously, the emotion of the situation was nearly overwhelming but there are facts of this case that also deserve mention.
Another insider noted: "I looked in the casket and there was obviously some cosmetic work done over his left eye. Whatever altercation he was in, it was clear that he had also sustained more than his his share of damage in the fight before it turned lethal."
No matter how locals feel about the case . . . What's scary is how such a major event can be blacked out by mainstream media. Luckily it seems as if the family is garnering a great deal of support from KCFD as the details of the investigation of this case have slowed during this time of mourning.

I think some firefighters are talking about this but there is definitely warning to be careful and not to get into the details.

It's terrible that it even happened and that it was preventable in that it was done under the influence of alcohol, but we all have to be responsible for our actions. And as a victim of domestic abuse, I have to think that it was only a matter of time before others, including his wife, were subjected to his violent behavior when he was under the influence of alcohol. That's a pattern and no one is safe when a violent person is drunk.

This man will be missed by family, friends and colleagues but he did not die in the course of his work as a firefighter. Reality is not always pretty.

ReplyDeleteNope. It didn't get covered because of the circumstances of his death. Nobody wanted to treat the guy like a hero, because he wasn't. His death was devaststing to a lot of people, but he was no martyr.
Give me a break. The guy fucked up and picked a fight with a cop and he paid the price. If his friends and family want to make a big deal out of his funeral just let them. The cops won here. Stop rubbing it in.

Aren't they trained to avoid these sort of things? If he was so fucking concerned about his safety, couldn't he have drawn his weapon before they got in a fight? Maybe the cop wanted to fight this guy.

ReplyDeleteWhile this isn't an apples to apples comparison, police procedure for a vehicular pursuit says officers will not initiate or continue a pursuit when, in the officer's opinion, the danger to the public or officer created by the pursuit exceeds the danger presented by the offender remaining at large.
What it seems we had in this case was an off-duty officer getting involved in an argument with a cab driver. At that time, no crime had occurred and nobody was told they were under arrest. The fire fighter ran away. What motivation or reason did the off-duty officer have to pursue this guy?
Nobody was in eminent danger. If the cop would've just told the cabbie to chill out this probably never would've happened.
He assulted the cab driver. The officer has a duty to pursue. The car chase policy has absolutely nothing to do with this. What are officers supposed to do, let the bad guys go?

ReplyDeleteKCPD does go to far sometime. During the bomb threat this week at City Hall, some aggressive policeman kept yelling "get away from there" talking to people entering City Hall. There was no yellow tape on the sidewalk, the police merely had the streets blocked off. The way he shouted at people was very disrespectful. Until the fire department arrived, police were too stupid to simply block off sidewalks and have other police on site explaining to passersby what was happening. If that was the nature of the police officer who shot this firefighter, then I totally agree that this situation was blown way out of proportion. Nobody needed to die in that case.

DeleteI am all for letting the firefighters grieve for their dead friend but I am disgusted by the Fire Department and its members giving this guy a hero’s funeral service. He died a thug’s death. The display put on by the Fire Department is nothing more than a testament to their typical union thug attitude.
ReplyDeleteThe officer was in full uniform, working a secondary job, in his capacity as a police officer, at the same hotel where the firefighter was having his wedding reception. The firefighter, his new wife and a highly intoxicated friend had just taken a cab from a restaurant a few blocks away. Upon arriving at the hotel, the firefighter and his wife got out of the cab and asked the cabbie to drive their drunken pal home several miles away. A dispute arose because the cabbie allowed the meter to continue running while they negotiated the fare for the drunken friend's ride home. When the firefighter's wife tried to pay the cabbie, he tossed the money back as it wasn't enough. The firefighter became enraged, punched the cabbie and then opened the cab door and began beating the cabbie.
ReplyDeleteThe police officer, again, working at the hotel, was made aware of the ongoing incident outside and responded as is his duty. The firefighter, upon seeing the officer approach, ran from scene. The officer gave chase. The officer caught up to the firefighter and attempted to take him in to custody. The firefighter, who outweighed the officer by a good 75 pounds, viciously attacked the officer, body slammed him into the concrete and began pummeling his face. On the verge of losing consciousness, the officer, fearing death, pulled his duty pistol and fired two shots into the center mass of the firefighter. In spite of the horrific beating that left the officer with severe head injuries including broken facial bones that will require reconstructive surgery, the officer attempted to perform CPR on the firefighter but lost consciousness.
The officer was in full uniform and had the full authority to respond and take any police action he thought necessary. The officer responded to the report of a cab driver being assaulted. The suspect of the assault fled. The officer gave chase. Rather than submit to the authority of the officer, the firefighter instead brutally attacked the officer. The officer, who suffered serious physical injury and appropriately feared imminent death, discharged his gun.
The firefighter was not in any type of uniform. He did not identify himself as a firefighter. The fact that he is a firefighter and the fact that he was at the hotel for his own wedding reception are superfluous facts unknown to the officer at the time of the incident. Had the firefighter survived the incident, he would most likely be charged under Missouri law with a Class A felony of First Degree Assault which is Missouri’s version of attempted murder.
The police officer’s reaction to the level of violence being inflicted upon him was appropriate.
Well said. The fact that he was a firefighter is unfortunate but shouldn't matter. It would have been the same incident if Bruno had been a teacher or even another police officer. His occupation is irrelevant in this incident which is tragic all the way around.

But considering the damage done to the police officer, you would be reasonable in assuming the cabbie was beat up pretty badly, but nothing has been said about that.

ReplyDeleteI had a cabbie in Toronto take my wife and I on the long route from a bar to our hotel. Guess he thought he had two Americans who had been drinking and didn't know the city. The fare was around $40. We argued over the fare and I then asked the door man how much the fare should be from whence we came. He said $20. I threw $20 on the ground at the cabbies feet and walked to my room. Never heard another word. Maybe the firefighter should have considered that approach.

ReplyDeleteHey Rachel....Bruno died because he brutally attacked an armed officer of the law who was trying to apprehend a perp. The perp (aka bruno) decided on his own to use his fists as weapons to injure and attempt to kill the law officer.
ReplyDeleteThe law officer believed in good faith that his life was in jeopardy (point in fact as testament to the good faith is picture of officer's face and extent of injury). The officer had no choice in order to save his life but to put two fatal holes in what later is revealed as a drunk fireman OUT OF CONTROL attempting to kill a police officer.
