TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY BIZ WORRIED ABOUT TOY TRAIN STREETCAR AND GSA TAKING ALL THE DOWNTOWN PARKING!!!

Tonight let's give voice to some VERY SERIOUS CONCERNS regarding Kansas City's tragic Downtown parking situation growing even worse . . .

Here is the money quote that really explains parking problems confronting Downtown Kansas City:

"If all of these hundreds of GSA workers park in the River Market area and take up all the parking spaces, where are the employees and customers of the businesses actually located in the River Market supposed to park? How can there be eco-dev in the River Market if there is no place to park? Just another indication that KC doesn't care about keeping the businesses already located downtown in the city. One more reason to start looking into relocating to Kansas."

For TKC this KC Biz complaint reveals that Mayor, Council or other civic interests really haven't involved the Downtown business community in their decision making process and once again have failed to create any community consensus for their decisions..

  1. Tony, your commenter answered his own question.

If you don't like the way Kansas City is doing business. The answer is simple, just move to Kansas.

  2. But I thought the streetcar was going to promote businesses not drive them to Kansas.

  3. The whole gig, in fact the whole Sly James administration, is one big taxpayer-funded amusement park.
Force people to work downtown and force them to park blocks away from where they work and then call it a triumph for public transportation.
Why not just paint storefronts and hire actors like 18th and Vine?

  4. Fuck it. If the Toy Train will get this bitch off of the street we gotta go for it.

I read this 3 times before I could figure it out. Wow, what a fuckin disaster.

  5. Sly only cares about his own business.

  6. The building that the GSA has agreed to rent has parking spaces for 1,700 vehicles. 900 employees will work there. With all of that available parking, why would they park in the City Market and ride the stupid street car?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Because they have to pay for that parking from $50-$100+ a month. River Market is free.

    ReplyDelete
  8. You people are clueless those 1700 spaces isn't just for that building but all buildings in that area.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Absolutely agree with Dave. at some point we're going to have to make the streetcar work and not just sit around and bitch about it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. No the street car isn't going to make anything work. Well yes, make you work harder so you can give your hard earned money back in taxes to the city so they can pay for the idiotic thing to operate.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They are turning River Market into a parking lot for their stupid trolley. Weekends already will be parking mess when JoCo folks come down and park for free and take the kids for a ride to Union Station and Crown Center.

    ReplyDelete
  12. To prevent GSA from taking up all the River Market parking spots Sly needs to go with 2 hour limit for on the street parking and unfortunately have to put in parking meters in the public parking lots.

    ReplyDelete
  13. GSA did not treat their employees fairly. If they cared about there employees, they would have gotten space in JoCo - free parking and no earnings tax. I would urge the employees to take aggressive action and insist that GSA correct their mistake.

  14. Give me a break people! Who WOULDNT pay $3-$5 per day to park near the office building? Why park for "free" 2 miles away, having to find a spot in the City Market, then walking to the streetcar stop, which could be several blocks away, then ride the streetcar, which has to follow all traffic laws including stop lights. That would EASILY ADD 15-30 minutes to EACH END of your work day. $3-$5/day to park next to your building doesn't sound so bad, does it?

You dont have to worry about me taking kids on the train. I dont want them coming under attack like we see on the KCMO buses.

  16. KC is NOTHING but complainers. Geewhiz. People can find anything to bitch about.

  17. Yup even blonde singers

  18. Very true 1149.

They are standing 3 days in line in the Philippines to get fresh water, but that's nothing compared to the inconvenience of a KC running event.

  19. We are injecting streetcar into this discussion where it doesn't need to be. The GSA moved right onto the streetcar line but the employees probably won't use it that often, so the city has an interest in creating a scenario for us to discuss whereby the streetcar was part of the reason GSA located where it did, and that it will benefit the employees.

I figure most employees will pay for a parking space at Two Pershing. It's not any higher than any other parking space in The Loop. Most people that work downtown have gotten used to it, and many that work for GSA can afford it.

The likelihood that anyone who is commuting from Kansas or Belton will then drive 2 miles North of their job, search for free parking somewhere around the streetcar line, and then take the 15-20 minute streetcar commute AFTER they've already driven 30-45 minutes is pretty slim.

It is pretty much bullshit, though, if the tipster is right; that people would park in The River Market and commute elsewhere, making it hard for River Market businesses to provide parking for their customers. I would imagine that even if the minimum parking restriction has been lifted for those businesses, than many of them are still required to pay CAM fees as part of their lease.

  20. The only "parking problem" in downtown KC is that there's too much of it. Jesus fucking Christ, you fucking crybaby suburbanites:

    This is a CITY.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The streetcar is just a scheme so developers don't have to pay for parking spots or build new garages. Ride your bike to the airport! Walk to Johnson County!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't doubt for a moment that these lame ass overpaid government workers won't want to pay for parking and will go through the extra time and effort to score free parking. They have a sense of entitlement to free stuff cuz they work for Obama.

  23. Meanwhile the phony freedom delusional bootstrap rethuglicans reap the benefits of ALL THE SOCIALIST stuff that democrats fund:
roads, school, colleges, ports, highways, sewers, streetlights, police, the military, sidewalks, electical grids, cheap gasoline, agriculture and food supply, technology, hospitals, medicine, etc. etc.

A Republican is a leach that think he's a lion

  24. Funny how 90% of ALL DEVELOPMENT in the ENTIRE METRO is taking place directly along the streetcar line...
