A lot of people don't know that KCFD doesn't have to endure STRICT regular random drug tests like so many other municipal employees thanks to some rather sweet contract negotiations.
A lot of public works employees who operate heavy machinery are subjected to random drug tests.
Cops are randomly drug tested.
And in Missouri welfare recipients are also drug tested.
Like it or not, powerful bargaining tactics from Kansas City firefighters have taken them MOSTLY out of the drug war.
However . . .
RECENT EVENTS AND LONG STANDING BACKGROUND CHATTER ABOUT KANSAS CITY FIRE HOUSE SHENANIGANS HAVE INSPIRED MORE THAN A FEW POLITICOS TO TALK ABOUT NEW STRICTER REQUIREMENTS WHICH MIGHT SUBJECT KCFD TO MORE STRINGENT REGULAR RANDOM DRUG TESTING!!!
The political reality is that STRICTER drug testing for employees on the public payroll is an easy sell. KCFD operates heavy machinery and works to save lives . . . Ensuring the health of this organization by STRICTER screening for drug abuse is a pubic service and possibly a cost cutting measure against liability and promoting employee health as well.

DeleteI'm confused. I work at North Kansas City Hospital and the Kansas City Missouri firefighters come in on an almost daily basis for drug and alcohol screening at our lab.

DeleteIn the past two years, I've been random tested 6 times. When I drive a passenger bus years ago, I was also subject to random tests. In four years I was tested once.
ReplyDeleteIf anything, all the random tests, which I passed, caused many lost hours of work to perform and cost the city a fair bit of money. Obviously someone, somewhere, thinks that you save money by spending more of it e.g. more tests.
Fine by me. Bring it. If you want me spending more time in a clinic waiting to pee, I.don't.care.

ReplyDeleteFD employees are randomly screened for drugs by UA
FD employees are in their own "selection pool" separate from the rest of city employees which equates to a higher % of FD employees getting screened EVERY DAY, 365 days/yr.
FD positive results, indicating the possible presence of controlled substances or their metabolizes in the sample, are LOWER as a percentage of the workforce than positive screenings from the pool of ALL OTHER EMPLOYEES who are subject to random screenings.
