Show-Me Blog: Who Is Alicia Stephens And Why Should Kansas City Care?
Here's the sitch:
"Alicia Stephens is the executive director of the Platte County Economic Development Council (EDC), described on its website as “a nonprofit organization [founded] to promote economic development in Platte County, Missouri.” Stephens also is a member of the Kansas City Airport Terminal Advisory Group, appointed by Kansas City Mayor Sly James to advise the City Council about the Aviation Department’s desire to build a $1.2 billion new terminal.
"Unfortunately, this places Stephens in a clear conflict of interest as her boss at the Platte County EDC is none other than Mark VanLoh, who is the director of the Aviation Department. In short, Stephens has been asked to serve on a voluntary group charged with passing judgment on her boss’ magnum opus."
Now . . . The Show-Me Institute lays this out pretty clearly . . . But what's the outcome of all this???
Certainly Council Dude Russ Johnson won't be answering any questions on the topic . . .
Meanwhile, Mayor Sly is calling for an "adult discussion" that's been played out mostly with pressers and softball TV interviews while wearing bow ties . . .
So, it's important to know that the destruction of the KCI is also rigged and yet another reason that transit troubles are leading this town in the wrong direction.

ReplyDeleteEconomic development occurs when there is a need and a business fulfills it. What passes for economic development with cities is just a cover for corruption.
ReplyDeleteEDC's exist only to wine, dine and hand out bribes in the form of tax credits. In other words, they take our taxes and hand them to companies that don't need them to "create jobs" that would have existed anyway.

ReplyDeleteDon't like the single-terminal concept, but it's not a conflict of interest. Van Loh is not her boss. He is on the EDC Board.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to argue against the single terminal, do it on the merits and facts. Nothing here.
Sly's advisory panel is just that. It's not a legal requirement, but just a group of people, some of which are expected to be biased.
Van Loh is the Chairman of the Board. The board hires/fires the Executive Director. Stephens is the Executive Director.

The airport is extremely important to Platte County. Who better to discuss this than a representative of the EDC and a Platte County resident.
The EDC has not taken a position on the terminal. It is waiting to hear what the FINAL recommendations will be.
I believe there is a representative on the task force that is leading the opposition. Can he be objective in looking at all of the facts? I hope so.
I would bet with 100 to 1 odds what the final EDC position will be.

ReplyDeleteThe KCI solution is to build an elevated train to connect the existing 3 terminals. You can then have your single entry/single terminal (which is a good thing) and you can keep the beautiful airport that we have.
