"Whether you’re a student, an employee or a visitor to UMKC, we can help you abide by our smoke- and tobacco-free policy. We’ll explain how the policy might affect you, show you the areas where the policy applies and point you to resources to help you kick the habit or manage your cravings.

Q&A:

Can I smoke in the parking garages?
No. Parking garages are university-owned property.

Do I have to quit smoking?
No. The university is not asking anyone to quit. This policy simply means that no one can smoke tobacco products on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campuses. To alleviate common cravings and to feel more comfortable while on campus, tobacco users may purchase nicotine gum or patches or work with a UMKC smoking cessation coach. If you want to quit smoking, we can help you find the resources you need.

And so . . .

IS THIS A GOOD LOOK FOR THE CITY COLLEGE TO GO SMOKE FREE?!?!

Word is this is the first step to even more tobacco crackdowns around this cowtown . . .

  1. The more people they stop from smoking, the better.

  2. Who was the councilwoman who pushed to ban smoking?

  3. It's still ok to smoke on the Boats and at P&L right?

  4. You can smoke in your cars. Anyone tries to stop you, tell them to fuck off.

    ReplyDelete
  5. tell them to fuck off no matter what. There are no fines or penalties associated with the non smoking nazis at UMKC

  6. Seems like a bunch of PC thuggery at work here, Antonio. But even more strange is higher ed is pushing the state to raise the cigarette taxes in order to increase their funding. If they promote smoking cessation and it works, it means less people buying cigarettes, which means colleges can't afford to keep a smoking cessation specialist on staff.

Can't have your cake and eat it too, folks. Cigs = dough. Dough = funding.

  7. Nothing about barbecue grills and joints sending their second hand smoke toxins onto our property to where we have to keep our windows shut during outdoor season?

  8. You crybabies. When smoking bans came down, people said, "It's the choice of businesses if they want to allow it." Well whiners, it's the choice of schools if they want to ban it.

If you're such a worthless addict and can't walk somewhere else to smoke or chew, pick a different college.

  9. Maybe they should consider an alcohol free campus.

    Alcohol-Free UMKC

I'd rather be around smokers than obnoxious freaking drunks any day.

  11. As of August 1, 2014, UMKC will be happy to continue jacking up tuition's and offering degrees that won't get you jack squat in today's hopeless and decrepid job market.

    ReplyDelete
  12. UMKC will continue to encourage healthy and safe activities like alcohol consumption, sugary drinks, junk, genetically modified, and corn syrup based "foods".

  13. Aw they will have coaches available for all the helpless kiddies unable to "fit in with the program" well isn't that special.

  14. Since the smokeless e-cigarettes aren't a. smoking, or b. tobacco, they must be permitted then?

  15. cigarettes=second leading cause of lung disease

  16. RE: "SMOKE-FREE UMKC"

I really have a problem with this!

Why in the world would a public university promote smoking, and make it free of charge to students?

Like there aren't enough health hazards already. To give away free smokes is simply nuts! No doubt this is being funded by the tobacco industry.

  17. Most of those blocky boys at UMKC look like 40 year old Down's sufferers ...must be a steady diet of high fructose corn syrup.

  18. 10:59, that's hilarious.

By the way, as a smoker for over 40 years, more power to UMKC. I have tried to quit smoking many, many times and just can't do it, so these days, I at least try to control it down to no more than a pack every two or three days, smoking only when the craving gets too bad.

I picked up the habit in college. Back in those days, you were free to smoke anywhere you wanted, except of course, classes when they were in session. And as soon as class was out, you fired one up in the hall.

You could smoke in the Student Union, the dorms, the cafeteria, the basketball arena. Anywhere you wanted. Had it been less convenient and more expensive back they (cigarettes were 40 cents a pack and available at machines all over campus), perhaps, just maybe I wouldn't have started. Maybe.

  19. Oh, and for the uninformed, UMKC is also alcohol-free. So you can give up that strawman.

  20. UMKC is full of liberal minds so it does not surprise me that they are trying to tell you what to do, or control your behaviors.

    Nanny state education.

  21. COMING SOON......

UMKC to announce ban on meat products in all university dining facilities. Excerpts:

"Medical research indicates a direct correlation between meat consumption (especially red meat) and coronary heart disease."

"In order to preserve and protect the health of our students, faculty, and support staff, UMKC will institute a ban on all meat products starting with the Winter 2014 semester. All persons entering University property will be subject to vehicle, bag, and body checks."

"We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and hope you enjoy the expanded line of salads and tofu products."

(legal disclaimer: this program is being sponsored and subsidized in part by the Soybean Growers of America.)

  24. So when is KU going back to the education business?

  25. First they came after the smokers and I said nothing because I didn’t smoke.
Then they came after the people eating junk food and I said nothing because I did not eat junk food.
Then they came after the trans fats and I said nothing because I did not eat trans fats.
Then they came after the fat people and I said nothing because I was not fat.
Then they came after me and there were no smoking, junk food eating fat people to help me.

  27. Thankful for the smoke free campus. Smokers are the rudest people I know. Sure, some of them are nice people but they are fucking rude when it comes to their almighty cigarette. They are supposed to stand at least 10 feet from the door and being on a college campus one would think that the average college student could reasonably estimate that. Then, they throw their cigarette butts on the ground. It's a trashy lifestyle and I welcome a smoke free campus.
