READ THE UMKC STUDENT LEGISLATION SUPPORTING THE TAX FOR A BIT OF INSIGHT BEHIND THE DECISION!!!

Basically, The UMKC SGA was smart enough to realize that their college is in cahoots with Children's Mercy, St. Luke's, KC Area Life Sciences Institute and so many other power brokers that opposing the tide would have been an exercise in futility.

Now, to folks who don't think this is a big deal . . . Remember that UMKC is still a commuter campus that is home to many working professionals also taking classes who might very well be swayed by this endorsement.

  1. They'll learn later on that driving up the sales tax will hurt down the road but agree that right now this is the smart move for them in order to maybe get a job at one of the few employers in KCMO who will benefit from the sales tax.

  2. Yeah kids, raise the sales tax and then plan to work in JoCo because that's the only place in the metro where new jobs have been created. Only going to get worse if you increase the tax.

  5. Since when did rich white conservative UMKC students care about taxing the poor. It's a regressive tax in every way possible.

  7. Guessing the sga kids were promised admin jobs at the facility. All they r gonna hire is admin anyways. Hospitals and universities are so overcrowded with paper pushers no wonder theres no cure for cancer and the common cold and people continue to vote republican.

  8. Pittsburgh successfully reinvented themselves in just this way. They are no longer 'Steel City', they now have a solid reputation for medical research (& the better hospitals & doctors this attracts.)

Medical research facilities are also what leads nearby Morgantown, WV to be consistently listed as one of the best small towns in America.

  13. College student governments are just training grounds for the scum who will someday be elected to a real offices where they can do more damage. The vast majority of students never participate in student government leaving it to the political science majors. If the political science major wasn't such a joke these future rulers would have to spend more time studying and less time playing politician.

  14. Merck will spend on research each year 200 times the amount this tax will generate. So you think some bureaucracy is going to find cures that Merck can't?

  15. What the hell. Parks and Recreations needs to extend the youth off the streets programs to those up to 35 years old now days? If these fucking degrees are so damn valuable then why can't these college educated geniuses go work in he private sector where the tax payers don't have to make their payroll? Giving this kind of credibility to a career field where there is little to no employment value is doing nothing but encouraging kids to seek education in futility. This is the same type of shit where corporation spent the last 20 years telling colleges their graduates were coming to them unready to work in a field and the colleges turning around and creating more worthless shit to dump into curriculum for the sake of building a bigger castle. We do not need to be doing this. Instead of dreaming up bullshit work and jobs on the tax payer dime we need to insist that colleges educate for performance in a real world where real employers are footing the bills.

  16. There are now scores of these college cooked up research facilities around the country. Anyone save a damn nickel on their medical bills over it?
