Bitch, please. Just clicked on the link and read that page. She posted that she is expecting kidnapping or some such shit at her court appearance. Also there are aren't any pictures of the garden, just a few up-close photos of some lettuce. I think she's lost it. And I say that as a gardener---I grow culinary herbs and veggies year-round here in Waldo, and I have for several years. I have numerous raised veggie beds in my backyard, most are visible from the street, and I have an herb garden in the front. I have a row of blueberry and raspberry bushes against a fence. I have a mint patch near the street that I've invited neighbors to help themselves to. My garden is extensive but tidy and attractive, my vines and plants are staked neatly, my raised beds are made out of bricks and landscape timbers (not trash), and neighbors and walkers/bikers in the neighborhood are always commenting on how pretty my tomato and pepper and squash and green bean and cucumber plants are (also, I share the veggies and goodies like homemade pickles and pesto with my neighbors; I can lots of tomatoes and give them to neighbors at Christmas, too). And that, kiddos, is how you garden in the city---keep it neat and share.
ReplyDeleteBottom line is that I imagine it is indeed legal to grow edibles in Sugar Creek, but I bet her property looks like shit and that there is overgrown grass and weeds in between all of those beds. I bet she has at least two dead trees that are threatening to fall on someone's car or house or fence. I bet instead of a tidy composter that is turned regularly, she has an uncovered heap in the corner that rodents get into constantly (I have a nice-looking enclosed turning composter that I take care of every day; it takes less than a minute). I bet she has piles of trash bags that sit out all the time. I like to reuse things, too, and I've seen some really pretty tire planters before, but I'd bet real money that she has a pile of old tires in her yard, full of breeding mosquitos, and I can't blame anyone for not wanting that shit adjacent to their backyard. You can't just require neighbors to put up with insects, rodents, bad smells, and lowered property values because of your mess, etc., etc. because you think it's your right to do whatever you want in your space.
Again, she's a nut, and I bet her property is full of overgrown weeds, foot-high grass, breeding mosquitos, rodents, and awful-smelling compost. If she has a fence, I bet it's in disrepair and falling down. I bet she has dogs that bark all the time and cats that she allows to run free in other people's yards. And I bet she has threatened her neighbors with her second amendment rights instead of offering to give them seeds and cuttings and share her veggies with them---and that's why she has this problem now. She's a shitty neighbor who was just looking for a chance to fight with the authorities.

Andrew is spot on. Anybody who knows the first thing about growing vegetables knows two things:
ReplyDelete1. You don't eat food grown in old tires any more than you'd take a drink out of the water that accumulates in them. They are made out of a variety of petroleum based chemicals that are already breaking down because of age.
Even if you set the concerns about the health of her children aside, which she has apparently done, it is also extremely inefficient. Old tires collect heat from the sun, no matter what color you paint them (more chemicals in your kids' food) which in the Midwestern summer will kill just about any vegetable that can be grown in this climate.
2. It takes a lot of work. Year round. Especially if you are doing it organically, which she isn't doing by definition if she is using old painted tires for a raised bed.
Tony B., you have a great deal of reason to be concerned about the mental state of Toni B. But your readers caught onto that a long time ago.

The real issue here is, should the government have the right to tell you what you can and can't do on your own property, even though the 9th and 10th amendment's (to name a few) strictly forbid it.
