Kansas City police guided dozens of unsupervised teens last night as they walked away from The Country Club Plaza and eastward on Emanuel Cleaver Blvd at around midnight.
The sight was one of the most tragic I've seen in Kansas City in quite some time because there wasn't an adult in sight and these kids were headed toward Troost with absolutely no parental supervision.
Again, KCPD did their best to assure safe passage . . . But, get it straight, cops aren't supposed to be babysitters.
And so, thankfully there wasn't any violence on Plaza streets last night . . . But let's not kid ourselves that Kansas City has solved this problem.
Unsupervised African-American teens and young people will continue to congregate on the Plaza and their presence will continue to create tension and fear among paniky consumers even with police protecting every block. These aren't kids and young adults who are going to to spend time at youth activities subsidized by the city . . . Like it or not, these are unsuprvised, angry and directionless young people who don't have anybody who cares where they are at midnight and this uncomfortable fact must be confronted if Kansas City hopes to "save the Plaza" from the violent flash mob threat.
We need to reinstate the draft or mandatory military service. It will help them and I'm sure the Empire would appreciate the additional manpower in our Nation Building efforts. Of course there are times when we just want to kick peoples asses also when they get out of line because we can. Like the Iraquis and Lybians for example.

The problem is that once the movies end, there is nothing else for them to do there. If the Plaza would fill that big empty space in the theater lobby with things that kids like to do, they would stay in there and do kid stuff.

ReplyDeleteI remember when my 30 something children were teenagers, and I cannot tell you how many times I got up out of bed to take their friends home because their parents weren't gonna do it. They seemed to be perfectly content to put these children as risk when they walked 1-2 miles home at 11:PM or later.
We live in JoCo, and I could not believe that parents did not know where their precious children were at ll:00 on a Friday or Saturday night.
Should the police have to babysit these kids? No, but I am glad they do. It is going to save them time and effort in the long run if they can keep these kids out of danger.
The kids would always sigh and tell me that just did not trust them. That was not true. I just didn't trust anyone else.
