The Emperor’s New Airport

If proponents want to argue that the airport is unattractive as a hub — a place where people make connections to other flights but not itself a destination — a shiny new terminal will not address that problem. It will only exacerbate the problem if it results in higher costs to airlines who are already being lured elsewhere with cash."
In one instance after the next, the arguments supporting the new Airport have been refuted and the "adult discussion" called for by Mayor Sly James has failed to bring forth any overwhelming reason to build a new airport that nobody wants. Instead, politicos refuse to answer any questions and a great many in Kansas City are silent about the fact that Mayor Sly is metaphorically "naked" on this issue and without a stitch of support from anybody other than developers or City Hall bureaucrats.
DEVELOPING . . .
With the failing of the "adult discussion" will come more personal attacks on the intelligence of those opposed and emotional appeals that a new airport will shed KC's inferiority complex.

I confess I messed up and voted for Sly. During his campaign he pretended to care about the citizenry and indicated he intended to serve us, but his reign so far has shown just the opposite. He only cares about big-money players - screw the tax-paying citizens. I believed his campaign lies last time, but I've learned my lesson and won't make that mistake again. I am fed up with his efforts to ram the ridiculous airport terminal, the toy train, the downtown hotel, etc. down our throats, while doing absolutely nothing to improve or maintain the infrastructure or day-to-day functioning of our city.

ReplyDeleteI voted for Sly James in the general election because I viewed it as a Northland vs. Jackson County thing; otherwise, both candidates being very similar.
As much as I'm frustrated with the tactics from City Hall, and the vision that this mayor has for the future, I don't think Sly James is a horrible mayor. I simply think that too much money is being committed to projects undemocratically, and without regard for the needs of neighborhoods.
If there has to be new airport, let us make sure it will be in JoCo.
ReplyDeleteI am old now, but I remember when KCI was built. TWA made threats that they would leave KC if it did not build the airport at MCI, which was where the overhaul base was located.
ReplyDeleteWell, KC took the threats seriously and moved the airport out there. And TWA left anyway. They moved their "hub" to St. Louis.
This airport has never worked, and changing the configuration is like rearranging the chairs on the Titanic. It is like putting lipstick on a pig.
I wish we had the downtown airport back. Ironically, we left it because it could not handle the "big jets". Guess what, the "big jets" are no more. Now the airlines want little ones, except for international flights, which we have never had in KC.
Well, this is just my opinion. I live in Jo Co, so no harm, no foul. Just saying.
What was it that Sly James said that made you vote for him for Mayor? He knew nothing about the city or city business and he danced around any real discussion on topics of importance with upbeat soundbytes. Oh yeah, that was it, he was "nice". You get what you pay for. Mike Burke would have been better.
