Remember that not-so-long-ago there was mass shooter who allegedly used the SPLC Hate Map as motivation for a rampage.
But it's still intriguing to see the local groups listed . . .
Kansas City's Branch of The Nation Of Islam earned a ranking on this list as a "Black Separatist" organization.
The Council Of Conservative Citizens was founded in STL but apparently has a presence in KCMO
Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ,The - Sounds a bit contradictory but they have some pretty hilarious TV programming and I think used to have a really great KC radio show that was good for a few chuckles.
And of course Westboro Baptist Church earned a listing as well.
CHECK THE SPLC HATE MAP FOR A LOOK AT INTOLERANCE ACROSS THE NATION AND NOT JUST IN BLOG COMMENTS!!!
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE . . .
There's also an opportunity for locals to register with the SPLC in order to STAND STRONG AGAINST HATE . . . Which sounds like a nice if meaningless gesture.

ReplyDeleteAs a white man, I'm not a fan of the Nation of Islam but they have a right to exist. They have a right to "preach hate" or whatever it is they do. It is clear the NOI doesn't like whitey but they also do a heck of a lot for their own community. And if you are going to be part of the solution I am willing to accept that you don't have to love everyone in America.
Blacks, Latinos, Whites, etc all have the right to self-help and to organize groups based on their own racial identity. Truth is the La Razas and the Black Panthers of the world have helped their community and they are groups I tolerate because I live in a free country.
I don't live in Europe where a government official decides what is "hate speech" or a "hate group". You don't like the NOI, Raza, MeCha, tea party militia types, etc.....IGNORE THEM.
There is no coming racewar. Just the next 40 years where we are all going to have to figure how to each have our piece of a smaller pie.
Hate speech leads to hate crimes, as in the original KKK case that put the SPLC on the map. So I have no problem with an organization dedicating themselves to pointing out the offenders. If you recognize the free speech of the assholes, you must equally recognize the free speech of those calling them out. Sort of like the N-word idiot on this blog and those that tell him what a fucking idiot he is - both are exercising their right to free speech.

ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how many people have told me "I'm not racist, but, don't counter-protest against the klan, they have the right to free speech". Why the hell would someone choose to defend the right of the klan to speak above the rights of others to speak?
