Disappointing KCPS Public Forum Tonight

Actually stopped by this one tonight and it was more depressing than anything else: "The Kansas City Public Schools will host its first of four public meetings Tuesday night to gain community input on how to improve the district."

  4. I wonder if they will talk about the $2000.00 every teacher pays to get out of teaching contract OR maybe the failed math and science curriculum OR maybe the lack of teacher training OR maybe unprofessionalism of HR staff OR maybe the fact that over half 9th graders read on average at the 4th-6th grade reading level despite millions of dollars spent on reading programs OR maybe the lack of security guards in the "hood" OR maybe the subpar sugar laden fatty foods they feed students and expect then not to be obese and/or hyperactive OR maybe how parents are being lied to about the quality of education their children receive AND most of all the parents who don't seem to care their kids can't read or write well enough to finish a college application or essay. Just some talking points for real change.

  6. Interested to see the turnout on the 10pm news.

At least the board is trying to get involvement from the parents/families. My question is: are they ever going to act on anything? I'm tired of all the forums and nothing really ever changes. I see no new initiatives or programs--just same old stuff.

And is it true that they just recently implemented a parent portal???? The suburban districts have had that for 10+ years.

  9. There is no easy answer to this problem as we all know. As a former teacher (36 years experience) I can tell you that a major cause of problems in all public schools is a lack of disciplain. The teacher could be Socretes and if there is no disciplain, no one will ever even hear him or her. This is not the only problem but it is the basic one. How to restore order? Parent involvement is a start but too often it turns negative: the ideas is make everybody's else's kids behave but don't say a word to mine , no matter how they behave. MY children are perfect, everybody else's kids are the ones causing the problem. As long as this attitude persists, we will get nowhere.
