Earlier today I ran into (from Left To Right) Sub-district 4 School Board Member Joseph Jackson Sr., School Board Vice Chair Crispin Rea Jr. and KCPS School Board Chair Airick L. West.
What were they talking about?
An interesting new effort that will attempt to merge community resources with our embattled school district.

EARLIER TODAY TKC LEARNED OF PRELIMINARY DETAILS REGARDING AN UPCOMING VOLUNTEER TUTORING AND MENTORING PROGRAM FOR KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!
Qualified Kansas City do-gooders will soon get the opportunity to help the students in Kansas City Public Schools and share some of their knowledge.
This is a rare opportunity for locals in Kansas City Proper to help instead of just complaining. We'll have more details as they come down but this is one of the rare local efforts that offers the opportunity to more Kansas City residents to share a stake in this town's schools.

I think they're talking about expanding it into something new and making it part of the "make it better" campaign.

They want baby sitters to work without pay. While the parents are out banging, shooting things, getting stoned, etc.
Tutoring and reading volunteers are nothing new; churches have been extending this help for years.
How much is the district already spending on consultants and other programs of one kind or another? And there are millions spent locally by scores of not-for-profits like LINC on all sorts of supplemental educational programs, as well as parenting, mentoring, baby sitting, and who knows what else.
The board is supposed to be governing the district, including providing oversight of such things as contracting and avoiding the $34 million fiasco with the HMM contract that Rea thought was just swell, but was canceled and attracted an audit from the state. If these folks want to be community organizers and run around signing up people for Google and looking for volunteers, they should get off the board and do it full-time. Besides, doesn't educating young people actually require some credentials?
This is the kind of thing you expect in third world country's so this is just one more part of our race to the bottom here in the US. KC will probably lead the pack though if not break the finish line string.

Amazing the level of hater-iffic comments on here for people who are VOLUNTEERS on the school board. As for the "scores of nonprofits" there are not that many that do any meaningful work and have any skin in the game. LINC, Upper Room, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA are about it. The rest do it on a volunteer basis with scattered results. As for google - you should be grateful that anyone paid attention to the opportunity to get the schools and community centers eligible. What did you do to help in that effort, in volunteering, in helping the community? Yeah. Crickets...
And the School Board is doing an amazing job of governing considering the 30 years of damage that has had to be undone. Give it a rest people.

Because commenters are looking for results doesn't make them "haters", which is a mightly overused word which attempts to inapproriately introduce some emotional aspect into what should be a statement of outcomes and accomplishment....or not.
So how much money does the school district currently spend on consultants and outseide contractors. Not long ago, it was famous for hiring family and friends and there were literally thousands of contractors with "programs" on which the district spent milions of dollars and the edcuational achievment level was high school graduates who read and did math at a fourth grade level.
The KCPS is a many million dollar operation which is supposed to be governed in a responsible and serious way. What specific outcomes are expected from having 100X internet in the schools, given the outrageous and out-of-control behavior, much less the learning environments that currently exist in some of them?
Lots of people are interested in young people and many already help in one way or another, but the school district isn't a club for getting togehter to do arts and crafts and sing kumbaya and celebrate "doing the best we can".
The KCPS has been a bottomless pit for taxpayer money and a hopeless derelict when it comes to educating oung people and it's been that way for decades and the young unemployable folks on the streets killing each other are testament to failure.
So, wehre are the results? I know, we're just about to turn the corner; there's a light at the end of the tunnel; we're about to reduce the truancy rate from 20%, and on and on.
Stating facts doesn't make a person a hater and making believe there's progress doesn't help anyone get the results youngpeople need to succeed.
The KCPS needs to be governed by the State of Missouri.
And to 5:55....I do something. I pay my taxes by working daily. I raise my children properly, and most importantly I abide by laws. All of which I learned in school, church, and my upbringing. I am not going to volunteer, my neighborhood does not have felonious issues. If my neighborhood did have these issues, I would move out of this neighborhood because I paid attention in school, church, and to my parents. I don't have to volunteer, and quite honestly my personal bias would not allow me to volunteer my time because the people who need the help are animals who are beyond help by me. It is never going to be fixed in the inner city. NEVER. No one will stand up and tell the inner city what is wrong with them except for Bill Cosby. Look what has happened to him for speaking the truth. Ostricized by his own race for speaking the truth. He should be glorified and praised by the black community as the ONE and ONLY person who will PUBLICALLY tell you how fucked up his own race is.....You go and volunteer in YOUR community, my community is doing just fine.
