THE DOWNTOWN RENAISSANCE IS DEAD!!! AMC BAILS OUT OF THE P&L DISTRICT!!! HAVE WE SEEN THE FIRST CASUALTY OF THE DOWNTOWN TOY TRAIN TAX?!?!

As soon as The Chinese bought the Kansas City movie giant we noted that they would bail out of their money losing P&L District venture.

We reminded folks about the upcoming sell-off last night . . . And now it has come to pass.

The argument that this move is independent of the recent purchase is silly.

What's more important . . .

THIS IS ANOTHER INVESTMENT IN DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY GONE BUST!!!

Even worse, Cordish and AMC had the red carpet rolled out for them by developers. To wit, Kansas City's Downtown is a place where biz goes to die and now local politicos want to double down with taxpayer cash.

Updated . . . A more informed TKC TIPSTER writes us . . .

IS THE AMC DEPARTURE THE FIRST CASUALTY OF THE TOY TRAIN TAX?!?!

Politicos want to promote biz Downtown but they actually seem to be chasing it away.

DEVELOPING . . .

  1. Perfect space for the Alamo Theater to move into.

  2. Nope, they're going to the crossroads and staying far away from the Downtown disaster. They also aren't going to operate the Midland. That one is just a money sucking disaster.

  3. Chinese emigrate from P&L District

TKC always has the inside scoop first.....KCStar will get this to their presses over the weekend.

  4. This really is a shame. I would hope that some company will use the space but even the biggest venues don't have the kind of scale that AMC can muster to make the project profitable.

Also, Tony is right. AMC constantly complained that they were losing money.

  5. Have you been to the theatre at St. Louis's Union Station? It's a disaster. I imagine if anyone attempts to run a profitable theatre from that location, it will be a similar trash hole.

  7. Who wants to attempt to go to a movie with the ever present threat of some NIGGER mugging you, or worse? Downtown is dead will stay that way as long as NIGGERS run roughshod in the area, like they now do.

  8. The only solace is that the location underwent some rehab. It stood for so long in neglect and now has a better chance. It'll probably end up as office space.

  9. I just couldn't see pay $10 for parking in a dark, unsecured lot then forking over $30 for tickets and another $20 for something to drink and some snacks to watch one movie when that same $60 would almost pay my cable bill for a month or buy me 6 more dvd's that I could watch anytime from the comfort of my living room with cocktails and no peripheral bullshit.

Content delivered on a large screen in a destination-style environment is a dead business model. It just hasn't been buried yet.

  10. Ten dollar movies, limited parking caused this not so much anything else. As a downtown resident, I drive to merriam for a four dollar show any day before 6pm. I don't support downtown businesses. They overpriced and overtaxed

  11. In addition, downtown residents are being told by the property owners to vote no on the train or the cost will be passed on to them in higher rents. I just got a letter today from the management.

  12. AMC hated Cordish from almost the beginning. The Chinese sale and move of their offices to OPKS was a great excuse to get out.

Also, the next big move you will see from AMC is their senior leadership moving to LA. The new office in the Golden Ghetto will be a Support Center, not a HQ. buy buy Gerry and the other high-priced execs.

  13. 4:30 - I haven't received that kind of letter, what building are you in?

  14. You'd be a top notch investigative reporter if you could just drag yourself out of the appeal to the lowest common denominator mentality Tony.

  15. How about we move Zona Rosa to the location of the P&L and reopen Metro North mall? WTF is KC doing trying to run business when they can't keep the sewer system up and running?

  16. 3-D seems to be the last card being played to keep the theater business alive. Home entertainment has finally caught up. I wouldn't be surprised if they bring back Smell-o-vision or vibrating seats like the gimmicks from the 60's. But here's the actual reality: movies are becoming more and more international. Surprise, other countries have finally caught up to our standard of living. Expect an influx of foreign films in the next couple of years.

  17. Yes, more crap "international" films.

What a bunch of BS. AMC's commie friends had nothing to do with Mainstreet exit. It's been in the cards way before Mao stepped in.
Alamo is top notch operator. Good mix for Mainstreet

  19. 4:16: You forgot to mention that after paying all that money the odds are you'll sit by some moron who thinks his, her, or whatever's phone calls take precedence over your being able to enjoy the movie. This actually happened the last two times I paid for a movie--and it's even happened at several live theaters.

Watching movies at home is the way to go.

  21. 4:16, 4:29, 7:15 comments...thank you for that common sense!! You speak for many of us. Keep it simple. No BS, I'm not interested in giving my money away for a sub-par experience.

  22. @5:09, Waltower Lofts at 8th and Main, its a rental, had a letter under door today that said to vote no or face the possibility of increased rent to pay for the extra burden put on the property owner.

  23. You mean these commercial property owners aren't going to just eat the hundreds of thousands of dollars this fiasco will cost?
    What a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 10:31, that letter would be illegal campaigning by your property owner. If someone doesn't want the TDD formed, they shouldn't be afraid to speak out publicly, but instead they hide behind their tenants as they threaten them.
