KANSAS CITY PUBLIC SAFETY AUSTERITY BUDGET PASSES!!! SAY GOODBYE TO 105 KANSAS CITY FIREFIGHTERS!!!

It's a victory for Mayor Sly and the City Council . . . But bad news for neighborhoods, firefighters, cops and anybody else who doesn't think Kansas City's biggest priority is The All-Star Game.

The Budget passed just now. Using City Manager Troy Schulte for a scapegoat is the lame tactic that's in the works . . . But the vote was 12-1.

More than $7 million worth of cuts to the KCFD are intact.

There are more steel plates on local streets than ever . . .

There's not much cash for infrastructure or more effective anti-violence programs . . .

But it does look like this Mayor and City Council are working hard to build that Downtown Toy Train.

DEVELOPING . . .

  1. There's going to be HELL to pay if they close down the station nearest to my neighborhood because of these asinine public safety cuts.

Why the hell do I pay my taxes if they aren't going to provide sufficient public safety?

  5. From what I heard they will be closing the station at 50th and N. Oak(Briarcliff Area) and the one in the PLaza/Westport area in two weeks. Jan Marcuson said she wants use the saved money to help build better suites at the new symphony building.

  7. A friend of mine is a KC officer. Said last week that the department is losing about an officer a week on average. It is likely that several officers we begin to leave the department in the near future not just to retirements but to financial and other reasons. Then looking at the Independence, MO public safety tax on Tues. ballot. If that passes, you can be certain that Independence will take several KC officers looking for better pay, benefits, and overall department. Independence would benefit greatly by doing this as they will be able to get expereicned officers without having pay for training and academy time. The fact of the matter is that just like the city, KCPD is in trouble. Officers are so short right now (100+ vacant positions not filled) on the streets and the dept is estimated to get about 25 new officers this year to replace not just retirements and attrition but also the vast number of officers leaving for other departments and jobs. I'm anxious to see how the PD deals with the All Star Game staffing and can control the city that week as well. Visitors and tourists will see the REAL KC that weekend as shootings, robberies, and murders will be rampant.

  11. 5:54, you say that until it takes 15 minutes for KCFD to get to your home when you have a fire. If you live in KCMO at all.

    ReplyDelete
  12. We will see how right it is to do when you have a fire next your house above blogger. Sly is done, what a liar.

  13. I live north of the river in KCMO but close to the city of Gladstone. It took 20 minutes for KCFD to get to my house last year when I had a chimney fire. Thanks to some helpful neighbors I didn't lose my house. What will that response time look like now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. These cuts are less then 5% of their bloated budget. Fire and Police, don't like your cushy jobs at KCMO, then leave. Someone who needs a job will always take your place.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 600 unfortunately it will get to that point, where people who simply "need jobs" will be applying to be a cop or firefighter. I wouldn't expect you to understand it but our professions require a commitment to the job and others rather than just "needing a job".

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tell the KCPD cops not to let the door hit them in the ass on the way out.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jeez, if the PD is losing that many officers how are they going to man the streets when the All Star game comes around?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Maybe Sly will contract out to the Overland Park PD.
There's one thing for sure, what's important to the folks at 12th and Oak are things like All Star Games, entertainment buildings, streetcars, and downtown hotels.
No surprises there, and none in the future.

  19. It's funny how everyone can bad mouth kcpd and kcfd and simply say their budgets are not necessary. I can't count the number of times I've heard people bitch about those guys and then be the first to turn around and call them in when they need help. If some people really think they are an unnecessary asset to this city, then I truly hope that when your time of need comes and you call they simply tell you to go fuck yourself. Especially with the state the economy is in and the desperate acts of violence going on, we need all the cops and firefighters we can get. Hang in there guys some of us still appreciate all that you do.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm not quite understanding why this is being called a "cut".

The 2011-12 Fire Department budget is $131,886,203.

The 2012-13 Fire Department budget that was just passed is $129,968,873.

That's a "cut" of $1,917,330. Why is this being called a "greater than" $7 million cut?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Continued...

That "cut" amounts to only a 1.5% decrease from the 2011-12 funding.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since there are currently 1,339 positions within the fire department, wouldn'd a 1.5% budget cut mean 20 jobs and not 107?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not only will manpower be cut, so will equipment and other "unnecessary" stuff such as medications for the ambulances. It's kind of hard to read all the griping about kcfd, kcpd, and kcfd ems that goes on and know that if we ever get called to these people for something serious like a code they're going to want all the manpower and epi they can get.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a load of crap KCPD.
When you guys had airport duty a few years back I would watch you "officers" leave the city job early so you could double dip at the airport. Get paid by the airport while on the city clock. Or how about the Majors who never show up for duty? Your Police department is a scam on the City. You make me sick with your self righteousness. How about the 4 hour disappearing act to wash the patrol car or missing the rest of the day to pick up your uniform from the dry cleaners? Blow smoke up someone else 's ass.

You don't want to pay for more cops but you expect to have your asshole licked on request from the PD. get real.

    2. Uhhh yea, its called being short handed you nitwit ...can't respond to a stealing call when someone breaks into your car and just tell the lady being abused by her husband or the person who just got robbed on the street corner to walk down to the station when its over. Its all cause and effect...when there are fewer officers are on the street, fewer calls get answered and its the less serious crimes (stealing) that get pushed to the back burner. Residential burglaries are still responded to by officers...for now. That may go away as well due to having even fewer officers on the street. Officers can only be at one place at a time.

  38. I wish people would educate themselves. The money (IF we get it) for the streetcar is not coming from general fund dollars. The KCFD were passing notes telling people the streetcar money was what was shorting their budget, which is a load of bull and they know it. KCFD will sling any lie and crap they can to try to keep their edge and footing. They are crying crocodile tears tonight because someone actually stood up to them and told them "no" and didn't back down.

Hopefully the reign of the bullying of Local 42 is over and a new era of civility will be welcomed. Firefighters are not royality. They are city employees like everyone else, albeit with a much EASIER work schedule and the ability to easily hold two jobs to make lots more money than cops or average city workers.

Hooray to the Council (minus John Sharp) for saying "no" to KCFD.

    1. Easier... crawling through a building I’ve never been in, working in smoke I can’t see through, to put out a fire I didn’t start, to save people I don’t know and belongings I don’t own in an environment that will kill me if I don’t do my job fast enough or proficiently enough. And even if I do, always knowing in the back of my mind that despite my training, knowledge, and skill, that there is a chance I may not make it through my shift alive. Easier… Pulling a child that isn’t mine out of a car that I didn’t crash and know that the child will die if I don’t do my job fast enough or proficiently enough. And even if I do, always knowing in the back of my mind that I can be sued for the death of someone due to circumstances I had no control over in the first place. I don't save lives ALL day or put out fires ALL day but it does happen occasionally. More often though, I check on peoples' houses when their fire alarm system goes off when they're not home, I bring and install a free smoke detector or change the battery in one when it dies, I take tax payers and non-tax payers to the hospital for headaches and toothaches and Dr appointments, and prescription refills, I pull citizens out of elevators, locked rooms, and locked cars, I do my job just like any other city or non-city employee, but I don't understand how it is easier. I wake up at 0430 every day I work, just like any other hard working Kansas Citian. I fight traffic and weather and road conditions to get there, same as you. I don't get any kind of guaranteed break. No half hour lunch or 15 minute smoke break. I get kicked, punched, bit, slapped, spit on, and cursed at. If I'm trying to eat lunch at 2 in the afternoon because I haven't had an opportunity to do so yet, and a citizen has the flu, or blew their car's radiator and an intersection needs to be hosed down, I can't tell them I'm on my lunch break and I'll get to them in a few minutes. I set aside my needs because it is my job to put others first. I don't put in my 8 hours and then go home to my family. I work 24 hours in a row. I usually only get 3 or 4 hours of sleep during that 24 hour period, and rarely do I get all of it at the same time. My schedule permits me to work up to 3 days a week. That sure sounds easier, but that's 72 hours of work, nearly double the hours of most work weeks, and NONE of it is overtime. I have a part time second job, but my family doesn't make "lots more money" than other workers. Someone has to be home with my children during the 24 hours I'm at work, so my part time second job earns what my spouse can't. None of this sounds “EASIER” every other city job. Kansas Citians are going to continue calling 911 for help whether 105 KCFD employees lose their jobs or not. Fires will still be fought and the sick and dying will still be treated. It’s the speed, accuracy, and quality that will suffer. More resources will be needed to cover the missing manpower, leaving holes in the coverage of the city. More fire damage will be sustained waiting for those fire trucks, more sick people will die waiting for those ambulances, and more criminals will get away waiting for those police cars.

  39. Public works has been cut, parks and Rec has been cut, I don't see a difference the city still looks the same maybe they needed to be cut. But the last time I checked nobody died because a fountain didn't have water or a tree didn't get trimmed. Kansas city parks are usually just a homicide crime scene, the city usually looks like shit anyways. kcfd has one of the best FDA in the Midwest that's a fact they are aggressive, they save lives and property not to mention they have an outstanding heavy rescue division, and hazmat team. Firefighters don't just fight fires, but when they do odds is one of the best around. The end division works there asses off with little or no sleep to help the citizens of kc on a daily basis. Stop kidding your self don't let city hall jeprodize your safety and blow your tax dollars, remember the e-tax I'm pretty sure it wasn't for a toy train or any other money pit"power and light", downtown hotels etc... Kansas city open your eyes.

  40. You know I am so sick of seeing the toy train won't be from general fund have you idiots ever stopped to think who is going to pay for the damn thing tp operate when the tax collections come up short.

It will be just like everything else that has ever been built money that should be going to public works, public service and what not will be going to pay off the shit that was built hell Kemper still isn't paid for and they want you to pay it off and maybe just tear it down for parking get real people.

So $415,000/year per square mile of fire department coverage for ANY emergency, ANY time of day is sufficient for you? Do you want to see that amount cut more? That amount seems like a bargain. How many fire trucks will no longer be staffed after 105 layoffs?

4 firemen per truck? Three shifts per truck?

That comes to 9 fire trucks that could be shut down due to personnel cuts.

  54. CIndy hasn't "forgotten" anyone. If someone has been forgotten, it's Cindy. She has helped the KCFD many times. But KCFD don't remember the previous times anyone has helped them. It's all about what have you done for me lately? Cindy stood up and made a hard choice and spoke freely and honestly about that choice. She should be applauded for making a tough choice and being straightforward about it. But KCFD doesn't appreciate being straightforward. They are so used to the double-dealing back-door tactics of Louie Wright, they can't understand direct conversation when it hits them in the face. Maybe after today they'll clue in that they are not above this city, they are of it, and will have to face the music like every other city department and employee.

No one was betrayed or double crossed or lied to. No one promised KCFD a rose garden. They've just been like pigs in slop for so long, when someone finally took a stand, they couldn't handle it. But Louie was in the fix then, and Louie ain't dumb. Maybe the rank and file are, but not the union bosses.

Please, go look at how other major cities are staffing. 3 is fine. As for the cops whining, they've been bloated for a long time. Maybe with less manpower they will cut back on enforcing petty laws and focus on where they can do the most good. But that's just optimistic thinking on my part. They'll continue to screw the city with double dipping and other tactics.

I see this as nothing more than the Karma gods correcting the imbalance left after MAST got screwed. And for anyone that's been ticketed by the laser tag officers along I-435, seeing officers leave is also karma hard at work. If you're looking for sympathy, there's none to be found here.

    1. On the contrary, I LOVE me job. I never said my job was any tougher than anyone else's. I completely agree that your job is hard, as is most everyone else's. But I can't agree with the person to whom that reply was intended that my job is EASIER than everyone else's.

  83. 637: its empathy that you lack and what we are all starting to lack. It's a heart attack. Suck it up. People have em all the time. How would that sound? We are passionate because we care, and when we get called to You- we will care, even though you most certainly don't care about us.

  84. Same council that 4 months ago approved $30.7 million in tax give-aways to Polsinelli-Shughart to tear down a building designed by a world famous architect and put up a suburban-style office tower in one of the most sought-after real-estate districts in the midwest.

    Glover called the developers "heroes".

Circo called it "preserving an area of town that's now starting to burst at the seams".

    30.7 million.

    30.7. Million.

  85. 10:09, that incentive was only offered after the Save the Plaza whack jobs ruined Highwoods' privately developed and financed building. If we're going to let the lunatics run the asylum, like the Save the Plaza crazies, we're going to be TIFfing stuff to keep businesses in KCMO.

And speaking of lunatics running the asylum, thank the good lord the council finally told those Local 42 thugs that KCFD is no longer in charge and calling all of the shots. Everyone has to feel a little pain.

  87. Firefighters saved the city millions in concessions over the last 3 years and preserved fire and EMS protection for the citizens of KC.

Council says thanks by redirecting dedicated fire sales tax $ to pet projects, connected developers and lawyers, giving themselves raises, increasing the mayors staff, and giving city managers a raise.

Only the working people are sharing that sacrifice.

  88. 12:33,

If the council doesn't amend the budget, EVERYONE may have to feel a little pain soon with less public safety personnel on the streets. But hey its what you wanted, so deal with it.
