Things don't look as pretty as Candice Swanepoel for some of the folks working in our oldest broadcast mass media in Kansas City.

FIRING THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR IS TYPICALLY THE PRECURSOR TO SOME MAJOR CHANGES AT MOST RADIO STATIONS!!!
Salaries have been stagnant @ BZ throughout the recession and a little more than a year the Conservative News Radio Juggernaut endured a great many layoffs.
Look for even more firings in the future as the bump from going to FM wasn't as big as most people expected and corporate owners obviously want to shake things up.

ReplyDeleteDarla has her moments but I can't say I listen to any of the other hosts on the station. I would much rather laugh in the morning with Johnny Dare than deal with the same politics all of the time.

ReplyDelete-Mike Shannon will be the interim PD. Expect things to take more of a turn toward a mature audience.
-Morning news isn't broken, they won't fix it. If anything they may bring back that round table thing they had on Fridays. Shannon likes it because it's sort of like his Ruckus format.
-Merrill will be gone. That experiment failed. The guy thinks he's Johnny Dare and he obviously isn't. Maybe not a return to Glenn Beck but probably a nationwide show from a real conservative.
-Rush stays because he is the king.
-With Shannon doing the PD stuff, Parks is without a partner. Shannon knows that Parks can't be a RINO all by himself all afternoon. Darla's being moved into the afternoon and partnered with Parks. Expect some good fireworks between them. The potential is there for some really great moments, not to mention there will finally be a conservative on in the afternoons.
-In Darla's old spot they'll go back to another national show. Rumor has it, they are looking to snag Michael Savage away from 710.

Darla is my favorite on the station, but she also goes into shows without solid information on her subjects.
Merrill? Just a vulgar shock jock. I don't listen to KMBZ during that time slot anymore. I switch to WHB.
Landmine Billy, who fills in for Darla from time to time, NEEDS his own show!! He's the ONLY person who is willing to actually discuss what's really going on, instead of regurgitating the same issues all other talk show hosts discuss. He breaks the mold!

ReplyDelete8:59 is right about Landmine Billy. For an amateur, he's very good. He's 100% better than Merrill.
I really used to like Mike Shanin, but since he has been paired with Scott Parks I have seen my respect go lower and lower. This "rino" schtick is growing old, and they are extremely insulting to their callers. Some of their callers are very uninformed, it is true, but they are still insulting.
Has the listening public been so dumbed down that an afternoon talk show can't have local guests to discuss upcoming events like the recent vote on the zoo tax?
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't all have to be "boring" politics. We have been celebrating Buck O'Neil's 100th birthday. Why not a program on the NLBM? Or interview former media personalities. When people like Mike Murphy used to come in after they retired, that was always fun and interesting.
Instead, all we get from Shanin, Parks, Darla, etc., is a rehash the latest national story (Herman Cain, Joe Paterno, etc.) or sometimes just a rant about something they saw driving in to work that day.
Even in the case of something like Baby Lisa, why not get some experts in who understand investigations, etc. Why just talk and talk about something without adding any real understanding?
Finally: I can't figure out KMBZ newsman Bill Grady. Why does he get in his car, drive to the Irwin home and sit outside of it to give his live reports when nothing his happening at that location? Or other times he'll be reporting outside City Hall at 7 a.m. about a meeting that's going to take place there at 10 a.m. What's the deal? Do they not like to have him around the newsroom?
