TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY STAR BULLIES SMALL PUBLISHERS BY SELLING A BIGGER JOPLIN TORNADO DISASTER BOOK!!!

Forget all of that hot mess about The Kansas City Star and their so-called journalism . . .

They're part of a corporation.

Most of the neighborhood, community activists and volunteers I've ever met have noted the pathological detachment of The Kansas City Star from any community in the urban core.

However . . .

THE LATEST ATTEMPT TO CAPITALIZE ON DISASTER BY THE KANSAS CITY STAR IS PUSHING SMALL PUBLISHERS OUT OF THE MARKET PLACE!!!

The book from people in Joplin was put together by photog extraordinaire John Hacker and Randy Turner and The Turner Report.

Unfortunately, Randy would have a better blog if he could spout a controversial opinion every now and then but even he seems slightly peeved when he notes . . .

"Though I certainly wish the Kansas City Star had named its new book on the Joplin Tornado something beside Joplin 5:41, I am eagerly anticipating reading the book."

That's a nice sentiment from somebody who mistakenly thinks he has to grab ankle for big media. Meanwhile . . . Turner & Hacker have a more authentic story with greater detail and better images and they're clearly being muscled by The Kansas City Star and their parent company.

Thankfully . . . They have a new book on the way and might not be totally defeated.

Nevertheless, this bit of media study is important for advocates of what passes for "professional journalism" which is really nothing more than marketing scheme supported by people who mistakenly trust failing corporations with their worldview.

  1. I received an e-mail from The Star yesterday asking me to promote a Joplin book signing. I said I would be happy to do so and asked if it would be possible for the Star to mention our book. I was told I would have to take that up with one of the editors, but it probably would not be possible since our book's publication date was August 28 and it would no longer be considered timely news. I publicize their book (and the Joplin Globe's) because my readers are interested in any book about the tornado, but I would suggest that if someone wants to buy the Star's book, please do it through the Barnes and Noble ad on The Turner Report. At least then we will get a few cents out of it.

  2. If you look at The Star's circulation, you will understand that The Star is a "small business" that is in a big building funded by the public through a TIF.

  4. Randy, You sound like a nice guy and nice guys finish last, when they are too nice. Charge them to promote their book signing. They have to pay their advertising department, they should pay you. What dicks, they are asking you for something, but not willing to give you something in return. That's why they are becoming irrelevant. KC Star is burning out.
