LURING TALENT FROM KANSAS CITY

A great many thanks to a AWESOME TKC READER for suggesting an important story about local incentives and how they can be used to lure highly skilled workers.

Sadly, this story only involves Kansas City because a doctor trained in this cowtown is quickly leaving for a better opportunity somewhere else . . .

"Weeks ago, a new doctor, just graduated from med school in Kansas City, moved back to her tiny hometown of Albany. An osteopath, who’s finishing his residency now in Jeff City, will do likewise next summer. The reason: A far-sighted hospital exec in Albany, John W. Richmond, started recruiting - and giving low-cost loans - to hometowners to go into health care fields, so long as they pledge to come back and provide care to the rural community for several years."

Check the story from The Atlantic . . .

Home Remedy: A small town solves its physician shortage.

And after reading, please lament the fact that so many Kansas City politicos spend most of their working day wondering about the best way to give away EVEN MORE tax breaks to developers and their mostly losing pipe dreams.

  1. small towns have been pursuing doctors via a ton of different methods for at least a decade. Doc Hollywood was filmed in 1991, for instance.

  2. So, they're keeping their car?
